Tips on getting baby to wear a sun hat?

Any tips on how to get an 11 month old to wear a sun hat this summer? Obviously much to young to understand why she’s wearing it and I can’t tie it on as she will pull it off no matter what or start screaming if she can’t. Is the only option to carefully keep her in the shade all summer?

Find one she can’t pull off and distract by giving her something to hold / eat / do as soon as you put it on.

It’ll be painful for a few days but if you calmly stick with it (a quiet but firm “hat stays on” and replacing it every 10 seconds if necessary, no drama or emotion) and keep distracting and not giving in, in my experience (2 DC) she’ll wear it happily for the rest of this summer. But you’ll have to do it again next year.

DS was the same, I didn't bother with hats for him until he was over 2. Parasols and general shade were the way forward for me until he'd reliably wear one. I got him to wear chin strap ones for our holiday to Lanzarote when he was about 15 months old but it was a constant battle.

For the pushchair, I thoroughly recommend a snooze shade

I sew in an elastic strap rather than a tie/velcro strap - quicker to pop on. Setting an example helps - all of us wear sun hats so she understands that it's a normal thing to do. Just be persistent and keep putting it on, but we also take it off when it's not needed eg walking along in shade, so she gets a break from wearing it. We use a buggy shade when in the buggy but sticking to shade is restrictive for that age as they will want to wander in playgrounds or on beach.

I seem to recall with my daughter I bought two identical hats, one for her dolly to wear and one for her and she was happy about that.

Get one with elastic or sew elastic in as per pp. When you put the hat on loop elastic under the chin then loop each side behind DC's ears. Much harder to pull off.

Obviously make sure elastic isn't too tight.

Just keep putting it on and distract her hands so she gets used to it.

I also found everyone else wearing one is a good model.

Like so.

Sorry OP. Small children will only willingly wear sun hats, sun cream and sunglasses in the months of November to February, and will only wear woolly hats and gloves in May-Aug.

It's The Law.

just put a factor 50 scalp spray on?

they look a bit greasy but it’s much easier than getting them to wear a hat

Superglue

Just get a nice comfy light one and distract her with something else as soon as you put it on so she forgets it there. Always worked for me.
