1 year old tantrums

Hi,
My little boy is 15 months old and generally a delight.
Over the past 3 weeks he has had 3 or 4 tantrums where he just starts crying and screaming. He then throws himself around and has banged his head on the floor a few times on purpose.
He seems so distraught and looks utterly exhausted. It seems like he's in pain or he's unbelievably tired and he just can't cope.
He's ok at nursery but they said he's seemed quiet and tired today and not his usual self

It's making me so upset that he's so distraught. I think it's related to tiredness (2 were after a day with a very short nap), todays was when I tried to bath him but he didn't want to (usually loves the bath). He's just screamed himself to sleep (it's 1 hour before his usual bedtime)
He is sleeping well at night (7-6ish)

I don't know what to do. Is this normal? Why is he banging his head? Did anyone else's baby do this? Tiredness? Or maybe teething? I feel so sad for him
