Witching hours....

Witching hours started all of a sudden from 0 one night to 10 the next at 6 weeks, 2ish hours of unsettled screaming. Not even overtired because she sleeps basically allllll day 20hrs I guess, just awake nappy changes, feeds and 5-15 mins of looking around / tummy time, with maybe a 30-60 min awake period once.

Anyway it's been 2 weeks and a day now. Nothing will stop the screaming until she's finally had enough and succumbs to sleep or a feed. Doesn't even want to comfort feed, plus has reflux so mostly has dummy for comfort (otherwise overfeeds & is sick even more), but doesn't want that either.

My oldest is only 18 months and I know we had Witching hours with her but I don't remember it being anywhere near this bad.

We're at 8 weeks 2 days now... is it really likely to end by 12 weeks when we're out of the 4th trimester 😬

climbershell · 18/06/2023 20:49

9 months?! That doesn't sound like witching hours! Its supposed to end 3ish months. Obvs get leaps, fussy periods and overtired crappy days.

Is this that 'purple crying', it nearly ended me. With dc2 I'd bundle us both up and walk the main road because at least the cars drowned out some of the cry. I hated wet days as we couldn't walk as easily (winter baby) it was like his cry would bounce off the walls of the flat back and surrounded me. He wasn't hungry, over tired, gassy, or anything. Just wanted to cry, and cry he did.

Then, one day, he just stopped, like it never happened. He did it for about 4-6 weeks if I remember...I don't remember a lot about his first 3 months 😅

Yes, stopped at about 12 weeks just like that.

Not sure the babies all read the manual saying they stop at 3 months!?!

It was horrific for 9 months then continued in a reduced format well into pre school years. Then 5-8 was the window of hell. As they drop naps, do more nursery and generally go through twos and threes that time of the day is not pleasant!!

Be sure to let your child know they must stop at 12 wks because the books say so 😊😊

Welshfiver · 19/06/2023 08:02

What I was referring to was hours of screaming starting at about 6pm until midnight ish. Which did stop at 3 months.

The last hour of the day before bedtime which involved crying and general mad behaviour did last longer, we still have that, but it's nothing like the first 3 months!

climbershell · 19/06/2023 08:21

welshfiver yeah that's totally different to witching hours!

My 18 month is still a pain some bedtimes, and moss nap times. Fine until we start trying to actively get her to sleep.

plumowl yours screamed absolutely inconsolable every night for ages every night until 9 months? Very unlucky, v rare. Sounds hell but not typical.

Thinking about it, i know my toddler she did witching hours for a few weeks, had definite stopped by 3 months as wasn't doing it when we started doing trips in our camper, but I have no memory of when it stopped.

She also had no crazy last hour from when witching hour stopped until 12 months, I remember that as did lots of holidays and camper trips, which were all quite easy. We had zero routine until 7.5 months post long 4 week csmper trip, she fed to sleep at whatever time, went to bed when we did.

she woke 5-7 timrs a night from 3-12 months (obv went through bad patches of waking for a long time for some of those wakes & in leaps).. naps became difficult for me at somehow around 12 months tho. And bedtime at 18 months can take a while
