Desperate for sleep help

Hi all

I have a 2.5yr old and bedtime is starting to get to me. It's taking over an hour to get him to sleep, going around 8:30 after normal bedtime routine. His is tired and rubbing his eyes, yawning before I take him up. A few things

  1. Would you drop the day nap? He naps for about an hour at midday. I've left him to it because I feel it's so early in the day he needs it. Going to 6/7pm seems like too much of a gap?
  1. Any tips for getting him to go down himself? I cuddle to sleep and always have and this needs to change now. I've tried lying him down and three hours later we're still up. I've had my hand on his bum, on his belly, sat on a chair.

I was happy cuddling to sleep but now it's taking over an hour and I think because he's so big, too big to be cuddled like he wants to. I need to change it because I can feel myself losing my patience now which I don't like, and I have cried many times. It's been going on about three months so I don't think it's a phase anymore (I was waiting it out). Thanks all
