Girl's Sun Hat Saga!

As the title suggests I am having an ongoing saga trying to purchase a suitable sun hat for my 3 year old.

I went to put her John Lewis age 2-4 hat from last Summer on her and it wouldn't fit. So I bought a pair of John Lewis age 3-5 hats as a replacement which were also too small! Wondered if maybe John Lewis sizing was off so purchased an M&S age 3-6 hat which is also too small!

Obviously starting to wonder whether my daughter just has a massive head but thought I'd just double-check general consensus on Mumsnet in case girls' hats are coming up small for some reason! Seems mad to buy a 3 year old age 5-8 or 6-8 hats but guess that'll have to be my next move!

I have sons but also had this problem.
I've always had to buy bigger than their age.
Do you or their dad have bigger heads? I find I struggle with hats too.

My husband is a strapping 6 foot 4 but actually has a weirdly small head - so much so that our heads are actually the same size. Potentially this means the big head genes are coming from me... 🤔

Are there any shops you found more generously sized in the hat department?

I do think girls hat's come up small, but maybe we've got big headsets too Grin

MrsSamR · 08/06/2023 14:41

@GoodChat it's an epidemic!

It's just weird as the correct age hats have previously always fit her so I don't know what's suddenly changed!

I bought these for my 2 in the winter sale, they are not cheap now but are best kids sunhats I’ve had. Waterproof, wide brim, loose and don’t make them sweat, they are unusually happy to wear them.

MrsSamR · 08/06/2023 14:43

Thanks for that - I'll take a look. I'm wondering if something adjustable could be a winner as sod's law I'll get the 5-8 and it'll be massive!

I have a just turned 2 year old boy and was astounded this week when I had to buy him an age 3-6 years hat in marks and Spencer's - glad it's not just me!

Catspyjamas17 · 08/06/2023 14:46

DD1 always had a large head (takes after me, "one size" women's hats never fit, I tend to get men's hats). I wouldn't pay any attention to age sizing and just choose something that fits. By the time she was 7 or 8 a woman's one size hat would fit better.

With DD2 it was always shoes. Her big little baby feet were much too big for the soft baby shoes in her age, the age sizing was a complete nonsense. Now she has probably almost stopped growing, and is 5'10" and size 9 feet at 14.

DD1 is just over average height at 18 - her head doesn't look out of proportion or anything like that though.

And DH has a big head and slightly disproportionately large feet! I never thought I'd have the smallest feet anywhere being a size 6.

MrsSamR · 08/06/2023 14:46

@MrsHsGirl it's such an effort to schlep the kids into a real live shop to try things on but think I'm going to have to as clearly something's amiss!

My boys have both always been a good 5 years ahead off their real age in terms of hat sizing... You do have to go in person unfortunately. I would also advise buying them cheaply and en masse as they will always go missing.

John Lewis kids hats are ridiculously small. I bought a size 3-6 years winter hat for dd1 when she was 5 (shes small build). It was too small for her but also for her very petite 2 year old sister.

headcheffer · 08/06/2023 15:09

Asda have generously sized kids hats!

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 08/06/2023 15:53

At that age I always went 1 size up in sainsburys, as they get bigger the sizes seem to get more accurate so now DD is 9 she's in the correct size for her age.

Agree! If it makes you feel better, OP, my four year old DS is in an age 9-12 hat from John Lewis 🤣!

MrsSamR · 08/06/2023 17:27

Looks like my DD isn't the only one - this is reassuring! Still need to find a buggering hat that fits though! Grr.

Had same problem with my 3 year old DD and she’s tiny! I ended up getting her 5-8 and surprisingly fits her perfectly.

ShakeYourFeathers · 08/06/2023 22:48

Try matalan - I got a hat for aged 7-10... for me

I have a notoriously small head but it's think the sizing might be a little on the larger head

I think they probably make hats in proportion with clothes when their bodies and head's aren't actually proportionate yet.

My almost 3 yo has a straw trilby from Tesco. Went for the 3-5 size and it seems to fit well. It's very cute too.
