Washing newborn clothes

FTM here, 25 weeks expecting. Do you wash your brand new clothes before you let your child wear them? Especially a new born... seen some social media posts of expecting mums nesting and doing their laundry already.

I never did, both were very happy and healthy. Glad I didn't tbh as my first was big and skipped a lot of his first outfits, but as the tags were still on they could be gifted to friends.

DiscoBeat · 05/06/2023 02:14

I washed everything, new or given, in Fairy laundry tablets. Peace of mind!

MuddaUdders · 05/06/2023 05:11

Congrats :) Yes, I chose to. I didn't buy many outfits before baby was born, perhaps up to 7 body suits and sleepsuits etc.

I do if second hand or being brought down from the loft. I often don't bother with brand new things, but I know lots of people feel strongly about it for newborns. Your choice really.

usernother · 05/06/2023 05:47

No. No need and a waste of time.

Ragwort · 05/06/2023 05:47

No, never did this. Is it a ploy by the marketing departments of laundry detergent? It is well known that new parents are a marketing company dream.

Ducksurprise · 05/06/2023 05:56

Yes always, and still do. I'm slovenly but clothes are transported across the world most of the time. Chemicals, dust and they smell horrible.

Theoldwoman · 05/06/2023 06:00

Yes, definitely, new or used.

I do with our clothing, bedding, underwear, towels etc, so why not a newborn especially given their brand new skin.

wfcats · 05/06/2023 06:02

I still wash anything new for the baby - retail supply chains are gross from start to finish - but I agree with waiting as long as possible to avoid washing things you're not going to use.

sexnotgenders · 05/06/2023 06:30

Definitely. New clothes smell gross, which is unsurprising given the supply chain. Besides, there's nothing nicer than freshly washed clothes dried in the sunshine. I'm 37 weeks with DC2, so am currently in the midst of washing everything ready for its arrival (mostly hand me downs and second hand stuff this time, but the same principle applies). I wouldn't start washing until you're about ready to pop though, or they just go stale again in the cupboards

justanothermanicmonday1 · 05/06/2023 06:42

Yeah I did first time around. I'm 31 weeks and I'll definitely plan on washing this DC newborn clothes too!

PurBal · 05/06/2023 06:43

I didn’t. There was enough laundry when baby arrived.

nahwhale · 05/06/2023 06:43

I wash anything new for anyone! Apart from socks.

Chanel05 · 05/06/2023 06:49

Yep, until they turn 2.

Ally256 · 05/06/2023 06:53

When my son was in NICU they specifically told me to wash any new clothes before bringing them in for him to wear.

bussteward · 05/06/2023 06:53

No, never wash new clothes - they’re never as nice again. Always wash second-hand, eBay bundles and hand me downs etc, as people slather them in fabric conditioner and they reek.

pecanpie101 · 05/06/2023 07:07

I never washed new clothes but I did second hand ones. I didn't use any special washing powder, just our normal bold.

curlymam · 05/06/2023 07:10

I always wash new clothes, for DS and anyone else in the family. I have quite sensitive skin and can come out in a rash from whatever chemicals/dust/whatever is on there from the factory and shop.

Gabby10 · 05/06/2023 07:12

I didn't wash new clothes but I did wash second hand x

Ruibies · 05/06/2023 07:22

I did newborn stuff, while I was bored out my mind on mat leave waiting for him to arrive. Once he got here I think I washed new things up til about 3 months. Now I just chuck him into new clothes, and he seems fine.

Spottypineapple · 05/06/2023 07:58

I did before DD was born, but more for the ritual of it and seeing all the little white vests hanging on the line. Never did after that

FisherThem · 05/06/2023 09:13

No, never do unless obviously grotty. Waste of water, energy and washing powder!

KitchenSinkLlama · 05/06/2023 10:40

I always wash new clothes.

Have a read of this!

CoalCraft · 05/06/2023 11:54

I never did.

SnowSnow · 05/06/2023 11:57

I will be mainly because I myself have had skin reactions to new clothes I haven't washed before wearing so now wash all new items for myself and will do the same for baby.
