2.5 Year old gets out of bed in middle of night

My 2.5 year old DD has recently (last month) moved from cot to big bed. Since then, I've found her difficult to get PJs on ready for bed. Difficult but manageable.

But now, she will get up, out of bed in middle of the night once or twice to come looking for me. Sometimes I hear her heading downstairs before I manage to intervene!!!! I always take her back to her own bed. She doesn't appear to want anything in particular when she's awake.....sometimes she says she needs toilet/needs her covers on/needs more cuddly toys in bed but to be honest, she's half asleep sometimes! When she's gets out of bed, it generally isn't a big emotional drama- I literally just take her back to bed.

But I could do without waking up during the night when she generally wakes at 630am anyway (I'm fine with that - it works for our day).

How do I get her to stay in bed/stop waking up at night!? Do I put her cot back up in her room and the thought of going back into if be enough to keep her in bed!? I need to break the cycle!

Thanks in advance!

The heading downstairs would particularly concern me in case she fell, could you put a stair gate up on her room?
It sounds like it's a novelty at the moment so I think you're doing the right thing, keep taking her back. Does she understand she should stay in her bed all night? Perhaps a gro clock type thing might help so it turns a different colour when it's morning so she knows she can get up?

We had a stairgate at the top of our stairs for this reason. My second son slept really well in his cot all night, then just after turning 2 he could climb out so he started sleeping in a bed. Every single night he would wake up around 2 am and come in to our bed, he would climb up the middle. It was easier to let him do this than get up and put him back.

I would put a stair gate on her bedroom or the top of the stairs for sure

Stair gate on top of stairs.
Just steer her back to bed with minimal attention. Quick cuddle and tuck her in.

Why did I not think about stait gate!? Second child and she's always been great around stairs so we've never had this for her before and I guess I've totally forgotten about them!

Even with stait gate.....I'm hoping this is just a phase!

Thanks for all your replies :)

I was thinking stair gate.

Oh and if she is half asleep maybe she is sleep walking?

Seriously impressed that a 2.5 year old knows when she needs the toilet during the night!

(totally missing point of thread 😁)

I changed the handle on the door so he couldn't easily open it! My door open so I could hear him but stopped the automatic waking up and coming straight to me in the middle of the night.
