Excluded from school tour.

My daughter, 12 was told she could not attend her school tour due to her arm being in a cast. It was at a swimming pool. I offered to follow the bus and mind her while the rest were in the water - no, we can't have a parent there and she'd be bored. I offered to follow the bus and take her once they got there. No that was allowed. They said to keep her home and they would mark her present. She was very upset and they did mark her absent. My OH who is quiet calm usually has blown the lid. Last straw was marking her absent after they telling me to keep her home. He wants to go into the school. I don't think we have ever gone into the school and we have 2 grown kids too. Hopefully he'll calm. Were the school wrong in their position?

Why was the school tour at a swimming pool? I think I am misunderstanding. Was it a tour of their school for parents?

ChopperC110P · 02/06/2023 20:38

I think that’s a reasonable exclusion. No idea why you were fighting it.

Successstory82 · 02/06/2023 20:38

Did she really want to go in a separate vehicle to get friends and watch them all have fun in the pool with her mum?

To her friends

IWonderWhereThatDishDidGo · 02/06/2023 20:39

Does he mean he wants to arrange a meeting to talk about it? I don't see any harm in that.

If he means he wants to go into reception and rant and rave at the people who have to man it (and cannot magic up a member of SLT if they're unavailable even if he screams the building down), then he's a tit, but sadly not that unusual. Schools get this a lot and it's the low paid receptionist with no clout who has to listen to it.

Anyway, I'm a bit confused why the school tour was at a swimming pool? What sort of tour was it?

IglesiasPiggl · 02/06/2023 20:41

I am confused. Do you mean she wasn't allowed to go swimming because her arm is broken? Surely that's a sensible course of action?

Shinyandnew1 · 02/06/2023 20:42

School tour? To me, this means a school tour around a school you are considering going to or already attend.

Do you mean a school trip? To a swimming pool? This is pretty unusual. Primaries tend to do swimming lessons in KS2 and would need to bus them out if they didn’t have their own pool, but that isn’t a one-off.

What year is your DC and what area?

TokyoSushi · 02/06/2023 20:44

Tour? Do you mean trip? I'm
Not sure why you wanted her to go to a swimming pool with a broken arm, or maybe I've misunderstood?

Hannahsbananas · 02/06/2023 20:46

Why would you have wanted her to go and sit at the poolside?
You actually offered to go along and mind her while the others were swimming?!
Why??

Workyticket · 02/06/2023 20:54

Tournament?

purplecorkheart · 02/06/2023 20:55

I assume she cannot swim with her arm so she would have to be supervised outside the pool by an additional member of staff (if she would be allowed in the pool area at all). If the school took her to the pool on the bus and she got injuried etc then I would imagine they could be held legally responsible as she was brought to venue as part of a school trip even if you were there. Sadly the sue culture of modern society makes Insurance clauses very strict and the school probably cannot take the risk.

I am not from Uk so not sure about the whole being marked present or absence in circumstances like the above but I think there is not harm in calmly approaching the school and asking.

FlutteryButterfly · 02/06/2023 20:56

Another one whis confused! However, Health and Safety whether you agree or not would not let this happen.

90yomakeuproom · 02/06/2023 20:58

What do you mean by 'tour'?

NewNovember · 02/06/2023 21:00

A tour of what?

ChopperC110P · 02/06/2023 21:02

I was thinking it might be one of those activities weeks that some schools do for Year 10s after mocks. Some schools do a week of field trips. One day to a swimming pool with water slides. One day to a zip wire adventure park. One day to bowl and the cinema. One day of arts and crafts. The child picks from a list of things they want to do and the school offers bursaries for low income children.

FlutteryButterfly · 02/06/2023 21:04

Although the mark of absence isn't fair so I'd get that rectified.

She’s 12, apparently.
I wonder why op can’t clarify what on earth she’s on about?!

PuttingDownRoots · 02/06/2023 21:08

I have seen "School tour" used for a school trip before (from a poster in Ireland I believe)

knobheeeeed · 02/06/2023 21:08

A tour of what?
What is the point of her going to a swimming pool and sitting there, supervised by you?
Makes no sense.

SillyBub · 02/06/2023 21:10

School tour is what is used in Ireland for a school trip.

AnneShirley18 · 02/06/2023 21:13

Yes school tour is a school trip in Ireland.

This is what we call it here in Ireland,it's mainly primary schools they do a trip to somewhere like the zoo or my little boy is going to a kids museum play type place,it's usually in the last week of school & the kids love them

Sirzy · 02/06/2023 21:15

What was the point in her going when she couldn’t take part? Surely being in school would have made much more sense

Smartiepants79 · 02/06/2023 21:15

Marking her absent when they said they wouldn’t needs to be changed and is hopefully just a clerical error.
Not taking a child with a a broken arm on a trip to a swimming pool is completely understandable. They’re not wrong to suggest it would have been a waste of time and rather depressing to sit and watch Evelyn’s else have fun when you can’t join in. I’m not sure why you would insist that she be allowed to attend.

NerrSnerr · 02/06/2023 21:15

Was the whole thing a trip to the pool? Why would sitting with her mum on the side of the pool be enjoyable at all/?
