Excluded from school tour.

My daughter, 12 was told she could not attend her school tour due to her arm being in a cast. It was at a swimming pool. I offered to follow the bus and mind her while the rest were in the water - no, we can't have a parent there and she'd be bored. I offered to follow the bus and take her once they got there. No that was allowed. They said to keep her home and they would mark her present. She was very upset and they did mark her absent. My OH who is quiet calm usually has blown the lid. Last straw was marking her absent after they telling me to keep her home. He wants to go into the school. I don't think we have ever gone into the school and we have 2 grown kids too. Hopefully he'll calm. Were the school wrong in their position?

If the school trip was only to a swimming pool and no other activities etc what would be the point of going at all?

I can understand being annoyed at them marking her absent when they said they would mark her present but to be honest I think they promised something they couldn't do anyway.

OhcantthInkofaname · 02/06/2023 21:16

I understand why they excluded her. But I don't understand why they counted her absent when they told you to keep her home. I would object to that

It’s obviously an admin error when they’d already agreed to marking her present.

They should not be marking DC as attending when they are not. I would imagine the promise to do this was by someone who does not understand attendance rules.

aquedt · 02/06/2023 21:18

You wanted to take her to watch an activity she couldn't join in with, seems weird

Yes, of course. They probably agreed to mark her absence as authorised rather than unauthorised, the same as the other children who are off site.

Kentkittypie · 02/06/2023 21:26

I'm assuming you mean a school trip to the swimming pool. Agree with pp this is pointless with a broken arm. What does it matter if she is marked absent. This seems to be a uniquely English worry- I'm in scotland now and could give a fig if my dc are marked absent or not- what does it matter? Its not a concept worth a preteen getting upset about .

Dacadactyl · 02/06/2023 21:29

Sounds like you're making a mountain out of a molehill tbh.

If you're really bothered about the absence, just an email to school will suffice, saying "it was my understanding that she was going to be marked as present because of the situation with her cast. Please can you rectify this and let me know when it's been done. Thanks very much"

The school were right. Of course a 12 Yr old would be bored at a pool when she couldn't join in.

Yes school tour is a school trip in Ireland.

Ah, right-so that is one mystery presumably solved.

Is it particularly common in Ireland to have class trips to a swimming pool?

Are fines issued to parents in Scotland for their child’s school absences?

There’s nothing particularly strange about that. It could be a water park.

No it makes no difference at all to anything.

But it says it's a swimming pool, what would be the purpose of going for a child who can't take part in the swimming?
I'm assuming that the posters whove explained that it's not actually a tour round the pool are correct

Well, that’s why it matters to people in England. Stupid policy though, I agree.

There’s no reason at all for a child with a broken arm to go to a pool.
I was responding to “Is it common in Ireland to have a school trip to a swimming pool?” which made it sound as if it was a totally bizarre thing to do (in general).

I'm in Ireland,, none of our school trips were every to a swimming pool, a water park yes,, but the swimming pool was a regular class during school hours and the kids walked there and back with the teachers.

Well, as someone who has taught for years, aside from taking ks2 classes to a pool for a term of weekly swimming lessons, I have never taken a school trip to a swimming pool.

I'd suggest that in England going on a school trip to a swimming pool would be an unusual thing to do

For weekly lessons but not as a trip

But we're all having to suppose until the op returns to clarify

SAHM39 · 03/06/2023 00:54

Wooooo! The school tour aka school trip had other elements. She isn't the kind of child that would lament not going into the pool but she did want the bus trip and having lunch with her friends. She just wanted to be part of it and to be able to talk about who did what Etc. afterwards. Nothing nasty. Nothing begrudging. Nothing cross.

It was swimming pool, picnic, playground etc 😊
