Hi everyone.
I was unider the mpression that's white fillings are free for children byt my dentist wants to charge £120 per child? I don't want silver fillings because of the Mercury and alluminium they leech. Am I wrong to assume white fillings are free for kids on the NHS?
Thanks!

I think if it's front teeth they use white fillings for free, but back teeth they use the amalgam fillings as they're not visible.

If you're requesting white fillings when the amalgam can be used (but you'd prefer not to) then I think it is chargeable, at least at my dentist 😊

Funny thing is my older son (13) got white filling for free on back teeth. I was told they (white fillings) are free for kids under 16 now on the NHS.
2 dentists have now told me I have to pay, didn't they get the memo or is there even a memo? I'm confused.

Amalgam (silver) fillings cannot be used on the NHS on under 15s unless there is a good clinical reason to (poor co operation/bad diet/oral hygiene/ unable to keep area dry enough etc) .
Over 15s amalgam is likely to be offered on back teeth and white back fillings would need to be paid for privately.

Here is the English regulation. Wales, Scotland and NI all have the same regulation https://www.england.nhs.uk/south/wp-content/uploads/sites/6/2018/08/cdo-letter-amalgam-08228.pdf

Thank you very much!

My 15 year old has missed dental appointments because of covid and dental cancellation by the dentist, he now needs a few filling but dentist wants to charge £100 per tooth as he said he is over 15, surely if he had been seen sooner he would have been under 15 and entitled to free white fillings
