My baby just won't tolerate tummy time

How important is it?? She's 14 weeks. She screams and vomits because of reflux and I just can't stand to put her through it. As soon as I move her back on to her back she's happy again. Will no tummy time have an impact??

She'll be fine.
Lots of babies hate tummy time and she's teeny still!

Thesunwillcomeoutverysoon · 28/05/2023 22:03

Tummy time wasn't a thing when I had my older dc. They never went to school with lolling heads!

TokyoSushi · 28/05/2023 22:05

Mine never did, so I didn't do it, nothing happened and they're both absolutely fine!

Any position where she's lifting her head counts, so if she lays on your belly/chest and then looks up at you or across your lap. It doesn't have to be on the floor completely horizontal face down.

ReeseWitherfork · 28/05/2023 22:06

Will she lay on your chest on her tummy? If your slightly reclined, not completely flat? She’ll naturally end up doing it when she wants to as her range of movement gets bigger (which she can from her back).

scrivette · 28/05/2023 22:30

None of mine ever did it and they are fine.

WhatInTheFuckery · 28/05/2023 22:35

DD1 loved tummy time, DD2 hates it, always has. She's only started tolerating it at 1yo, she's been able to sit up since 5.5 months and is perfectly healthy

NewPinkJacket · 28/05/2023 22:49

Don't do it then!

'Tummy time' was never a thing when my kids were born and it certainly wasn't a thing when me and my siblings were born.

These suggestions are all well and good but you need to remember that's all they are.

Just enjoy your baby.

Carrying a baby in a sling counts towards tummy time too!

EezyOozy · 28/05/2023 22:57

I did tummy time with my first but not my second. The are both the same in terms of development. The second child sat up and walked earlier. Just don’t bother!

PinkButtercups · 28/05/2023 23:16

It's a whole load of faff I think.

My DS didn't mind it but my twins who both have reflux don't like it so I don't do it.

Babies laying on your chest also counts as tummy time, a midwife told me that.

Do what works for you and your baby.

CoronationKicking · 28/05/2023 23:39

I'd never even heard of it. They seem to have come through unscathed

bumhug · 29/05/2023 00:00

All babies hate tummy time!

lakesummer · 29/05/2023 00:07

My twins hated it so much.
I had a little ladybird spinner I used to put them on.
We ended up calling it the wheel of death they screamed on it so much.
Looking back I should have ditched the blinking thing but I really wanted to do parenting right.

romdowa · 29/05/2023 00:16

My son hated it , I used to lean back on pillows and prop him on my chest. He's 18 months now and there's been no development issues due to lack of tummy time.

Notanotherone5 · 29/05/2023 00:42

My daughter absolutely hated it. She didn’t roll / crawl until she was about 2 as she just wouldn’t tolerate being on her front at all! However, she did sit at 5 months, cruise furniture at 7 months and walk at 11 months. No long term impacts at all

Isn't tummy time to help with head shape, too? To avoid plagiocephaly? AKA flat head.

Charliecatpaws · 29/05/2023 03:18

My DC are 25 & 21 what is tummy time? Did they miss out on something special? They both are well adjusted adults.

Marchitectmummy · 29/05/2023 03:26

Its quite common for babies to not like it, 4 our of 5 of our girls did not like it. I can see why they wouldn't, imagine constantly having milk in your stomach and then being forced to lay on it....

Mumuser124 · 29/05/2023 03:46

Mine hated it too. I just stopped doing it. He is a happy, walking, bumbbling 3 year old now with no issues.

Topseyt123 · 29/05/2023 03:58

So don't do it. It wasn't a thing when my three were born and they have reached their twenties now without issues.

I'd never even heard of "tummy time" until relatively recently on here, and it honestly sounds like such bollocks to me. Parents who post about it are usually doing so because their babies don't like it.

I wouldn't bother with it. Babies with strengthen their neck muscles without it, as they have for centuries.

DeflatedAgain · 29/05/2023 04:15

You can do it on your lap, chest and over your thighs.

There's some great videos on YouTube.

THisbackwithavengeance · 29/05/2023 04:18

Good Lord, if she hates it and it's likely painful, why on earth would you do it?

Put the parenting book down and listen to your baby. She's not going to end up deformed because you didn't do tummy time.

I don't ever remember doing it with mine as it clearly wasn't a thing then.

Setyoufree · 29/05/2023 04:30

Mine absolutely hated it. As above though, time in a sling on or your chest is totally fine as well so just do that.
