Night time flailing

My baby is 11 week old and he flails his arms, bangs his legs and tosses his head in the night, sometimes for hours. He goes to sleep easily around 9 then any time after 3am he starts thrashing and it can go on for the rest of the night unless I let him sleep on me. He manages to sleep through the whole thing and you can tell he wants to be asleep because if I try dreamfeeding or winding he either sleeps through it or goes straight back to sleep. I've currently gone back to swaddling to see if it helped (it does a bit) I also tried treating reflux, winding, calming with white notice, a rockit, if I pin his limbs down with my hands then that seems to calm him for about 20mins and then it starts again.
My husband says to ignore him as if he's asleep it's must not be bothering him but I struggle to sleep through it. I've tried googling it and it seems to be common but I can't find any answers about the cause or solutions so any suggestions are welcome?
