Calling prefold experts - where am I going wrong?

Am in first week of nappy laundry trial, using Cotton Bottom wraps and prefolds. All fine when DS (6.5 mths) pees, but EVERY ONE of the four pooey nappies has leaked poo onto the wrap. Loads, in the case of the last two.

I put paper liners in and they didn't help, so what am I doing wrong? I can't carry three wraps around just in case he poos through them all!

I am no expert but we also used prefolds and wraps with a laundry service, and we soon got used to rinsing the wraps after every poo

I think liners make it WORSE until the poos are solid

prefolds from a nappy laundry are convenient in many ways but not great at avoiding leaks IME, sorry

CarGirl · 19/02/2008 18:47

Prefolds are not great for poo containment, especially explosive bf or early weaning poo. If you look on the nappyladywebsite there are a few different folds for prefolds - ie fanning out the back which improve poo containment.

Shaped nappies are much better so if it's just a trial I would be tempted to buy shaped nappies and wash my own!

Same experience as F&Z, I rinsed a lot of poo out of wraps early on

It got a bit easier when his poos got more solid, then the paper liners are really useful, but still some leakage.

DS is 18 months and I've finally got round to ordering some shaped ones to wash at home

OK, not just me. Good, but then again, bad shudder

Will check out the new folds, but also am already hankering after shaped nappies. Have seen ten Wambamboos for £45 on eBay, which is nearly half price - would I be insane to just grab them and wait for trial to be over? DH does the laundry in our house, so has yet to be convinced of benefits of yet another wash every couple of days...

Go for the wambamboos, they are direct from the manufacturer and only reduced as they have been rebranded, you won't get another chance to get them so cheaply

Nappyzone · 19/02/2008 21:18

i agree - are they the ones that say geobel on them or wambamboo curly?

curlywurlycremeegg · 19/02/2008 21:20

Yes they are those ones

How is your little walker? DS2 has been up and about for a couple of weeks now, and didn't catch chickenpos of DD thank goodness!

Nappyzone · 19/02/2008 21:24

yey - well it seems he only walks at nursery apart from the odd bits but mainly crawling. He has had d and v since last fri though has had no 'action' in last 24 hrs has been so needy poor boy - i have had the trots as well (tmi) so it has been a nice start to half term lol! Are you pock free then? - PHEW!

curlywurlycremeegg · 19/02/2008 21:33

yes DD is very happy that her "chicken spots" have gone and as DS1 has already had them it looks like we are in the clear

Nappyzone · 19/02/2008 21:36

hooray!

Moorhen · 19/02/2008 21:36

I bought them! Had a chat with DH and he agreed to it, tho now thinks we should end the prefold trial as we're not going to stick with them.

I think we might as well give it a bit longer and let someone else do the washing for a while...

I've got some wambamboo (some geobel & some bambineo label) nappies for sale if you'd like some more, some are new and some used - you'll need at least 16 if you're air drying, mine are size 2 from 18lbs ish
