Newborn feeding

My 5 day old has been draining 3 ounce bottles every 3 hours. Tonight he is now screaming for more milk once the bottle is gone. I feel like 4 ounces for a 5 day old would be over feeding. Any advice?

The NHS recommends responsive feeding.
You have a tiny baby who is showing you he is hungry, just feed him.

3 under 2s all had different milk needs. I never bother following all the must do this that and the other as my babies tell me what they want not some silly guidelines. So when one is hungry more than another I know more milk is needed. So luckily got 3 happy babies. If baby ain't draining bottle then not hungry or if they are then they want more after winding.

Babies should be fed responsively. He is hungry, feed him.

I agree, feed the baby if baby is still hungry. You can always talk to your health visitor or midwife for reassurance

Always feed when hungry. They never overeat.

Is your baby struggling with reflux? They can tend to overfeed if they have reflux as it sooths the pain. If they otherwise don't have any reflux symptoms, then I agree with others, feed responsively.

If you're pace feeding give the baby as much as they want.

You can't overfeed a tiny baby.

RedRobyn2021 · 08/05/2023 08:04

I agree with the others but to add that if you aren't already you should be pace feeding, if you're not sure what that is just put it into Google.

All children are different if baby is asking for more food you are doing the right thing by giving them more.
