You should definitely take him to the doctor. Why is it coming off? Has he had an accident?

Yes you need to get that looked at, if that comes off he's going to be very very sore. How did it happen?

Has he had hand, foot and mouth recently? As this can happen after that. And after other virus's too I think.

Thank you, We initially went to the gp as it was infected and we were given antibiotics for it but they didn’t seem to care about the nail itself. We are still very worried as the nail isn’t looking great x

Might be worth going back to the dr but if it was badly infected that can cause the nail to come off. It looks from the picture like it's growing back underneath?
I had similar from an infection when I was a child (quite a bit older than your son though).

Thank you for your replies, I will ring them on Tuesday. It doesn’t hurt him when we touch it but we are worried about it still x

There’s no need to go to the doctors! The infection temporarily damaged the nail matrix which stopped growing it’s started growing again now the infection has cleared up so a new nails is growing and the old one is growing out. It will fall off but only when the new one pushes it off by growing back in. Trim the old one around the free edges so it doesn’t catch on anything in the meantime but don’t worry, looks like the new nail is growing in perfectly

I agree that it looks healthy now and will just fall off. My DS had this happen after H,F & M and it looked just like that. It was completely fine and the new nail quickly grew in place.

I agree that if there is a clear cause which has been treated, it's fine to just leave it unless there's a problem. Your initial post sounded like it had just randomly happened which obviously isn't OK!
