Worried about DS lack of appetite

Becproc23 · 06/05/2023 08:35

My DS is 14 weeks old, weighs about 6.3kg.

Up until about a week ago, he had a good appetite, consuming just over the recommended ´body weight x 150ml’ per 24 hours. This amount started to drop and turned out he had a tummy bug, so the decrease in appetite made sense and dr wasn’t worried.

He now seems better, but his appetite still hasn’t improved. Normally by this time of the morning (8:30), he’ll have had 300mls, but has only had 100mls and doesn’t want anymore. He seems happy - he’s currently rolling around on the floor cooing.

Has anyone else experienced anything like this? How long did it take for your DC to get their appetite back after a bug? Anyone else noticed a natural decrease in appetite at 3 months?

‘’Any advice is appreciated.

Sorry if you’ve thought of this but could he need to go up a teat size? That was always a sign with mine. Of course it could also just be the bug. Maybe go and get him weighed next week, and in the meantime offer little and often. There’s definitely no natural decrease of appetite at his or any age though, illness aside, milk should only increase until you start weaning.

Thank you for your reply. I’m finding little and often is the best way to give him food. I feel like I’m literally forcing it at times. It’s so weird as he seems normal in himself otherwise. Plenty of wet nappies etc. This is the 8th day of this.

Sorry I meant to ask - what test size did you use for your 3 month old?

We used mam size 2 medium flow ones, although youngest went onto size 3 at just before 4 months.

Thank you, that’s good to know.

We’ve been using the same Sainsburys formula bottles since he was born. They say they are suitable from 0 months to toddler. I will take a look at the man ones

One teat won’t be suitable from birth to toddler, that must be the bottles themselves and usually you would change the teats to faster flow ones every few months. You buy teats from the same brand as your bottles so that they fit, so Sainsbury’s for you; you don’t need to look at Mam if you’re otherwise happy with your bottles. I would check the teats you have, if they say 0 or 1 on them then they’re slow flow for newborns. Size 2s which are medium flow usually for 2 months+ are probably what you want at his age. It could still be the illness of course but not finishing the bottle because it’s too hard work to get the milk out is the typical sign that they’re ready for the next teat. So definitely worth checking!

Thanks for your help. I’m going to go to Sainsburys soon and have a look at what other teat sizes they have. I’ll let you know how we get on.
