Bedtime for 8 year olds

Hello,

what time do your 8 year olds go to bed? Ours has always gone up about 7.30/8pm but we’ve noticed he’s taking a long time to fall asleep now.

He has a good bedtime routine and wakes up around 6.30-6.45am.

We are wondering if he goes up to bed too early now he’s getting older?

8:30, remains so at 9

locomum83 · 04/05/2023 21:35

Yeah usually in bed by 8.30 asleep by 9ish, mostly. I don't think she'd sleep any earlier, gets up at 7.30am for school

bluechameleon · 04/05/2023 21:50

Goes up about 7.45, we finish reading at 8.30 and say goodnight. He can choose to keep his lamp on and read, but almost always chooses not to.

About 8:15-8:30. I normally have to get her up in the morning at 7:30 though.

Canyoucheckonme · 04/05/2023 21:54

9yo here. Goes up about 8.30/9pm but most of the time doesn't fall asleep til nearer 10pm as he's reading. He's up at 7am. He needs less sleep than his 12yo brother and always has done...

7:15 Wash and teeth brush
7:30 Bed and story / cuddle
8:00 Lights out

Up at 7:30am for school.

Ours has a story until just after 7, then reads or listens to an audiobook until around 7.45, usually straight asleep after that. Does have a bit later on Friday/Saturday. Always up by 6.30 at the latest whatever time she goes to sleep.

Nine year old here, he takes himself off for shower at 830, has a snack and chat and bed lights out at 915. Bounces out of the bed at 7:00 every school day.

TeeNoG · 04/05/2023 22:14

Up to bed for 8.30ish, pyjamas on, a chat or a book and a cuddle, brush teeth etc, and I leave him to go to sleep by 9pm.

I wake him up at 7.15 on school mornings, let him wake naturally at weekends.

Paramummy3 · 04/05/2023 22:36

Bed at 8, or later at 830 one night a week due to cubs.

reads till 9

lies in bed humming till about 10

Longwhiskers · 04/05/2023 22:37

Lights out 8.30. Wakes around 6 but always has done.

mafsfan · 04/05/2023 22:41

Asleep by 8 but they're up at 6:45 for school and always tired by 7/7:30!

Schum · 04/05/2023 22:43

8.30pm.I wake him at 7.30am for school.

I remember fretting about ds1 going to bed too late because he had to be up for school and then I just got to the point of relaxing about it because he gets up in the morning absolutely fine, bounces into school and never appears "tired and grumpy" so I've just concluded that he's having enough sleep.

He's 10 now and falls asleep around 10 though is in bed from 9. Occasionally falls asleep earlier, occasionally later and is allowed up later on a weekend.

Personally I wouldn't worry too much about the time they sleep and more focus on how they present the next day and over a period of time. If they're functioning well, getting up ok and behaving well, they're getting enough sleep.

Thank you everyone, seems 8.30pm is average.

Selfishly we like our evenings as well-perhaps we could try letting him sit quietly in his room for half an hour before switching off his own light.

We also have a 5yo so will have a fight on our hands if the older one stays downstairs 😂

Goes up to bed at 9pm. PJs and washed by 9.30pm. Faffs around till 10pm. Gets up in the morning, happy enough. But if I could stop the half hour faffing around bit I'd be happier.

Tisfortired · 05/05/2023 15:27

I have a 9 year old and we start his bedtime routine at 8 - I leave his room usually around 8:30 (we read together) and he’s always asleep by the time I’ve had a shower and look in on him before I go downstairs at 9. We do let him have a late night on a Saturday and theoretically can stay up with us as late as he wants but he’s always asleep by 9:30 😂 he can talk the talk but not walk the walk yet!

readysteadynono · 03/09/2024 22:31

Gets ready for bed at 7pm
Story until around 7.30/7.45
Reads or plays in room quietly until about 9pm
Wakes about 7/7.15am
