Potty training.. car journeys

We started potty training our 2.8 year old this weekend. Been fantastic, no wet accidents and all wee’s have made it to the toilet or potty. Poos are unsuccessful as of yet but I expected that.
He has a full day of nursery tomorrow, but do I take him in the car with pants or a nappy on? It’s about a 20min journey almost all A roads so not likely I’ll be able to pull over. We haven’t braved the car or anywhere without a nappy yet!

We had several wee accidents in the car when potty training DD (only when she fell asleep and then woke up and had a wee) and we had to take all of the covers off the seat to wash. In the end we started putting a nappy on the outside of her clothes to protect the car seat. I’ve heard that some people use puppy pads. I wanted to avoid putting her back into nappies under her clothes as I thought it might confuse her.

I normally line the car seat with a plastic bag and a towel, get them try the potty immediately before getting in the car and as soon as we get wherever we are going. Twenty minutes should be fine.

We bought a car seat liner on amazon, its not been 'tested' yet but looks like it would do the trick

Get them to wee before you leave if you can. Mine never leave the house without going for a wee and they are adults now!! It served us well throughout the younger years. Also the car seat liner just in case

I used a seat protector like this one for the car seat and pushchair. It gave me a bit of reassurance. I still have it in case of long journeys or being stuck in traffic as my 4 year old occasionally although rarely has an accident.

Do you have pull ups? Put them on over pants.

Is he able to tell you he needs the toilet and then go himself? If you think he may have an accident on a 20 minute journey he may not be ready for a full day out of the house in pants.

He’s not been using the potty very long at home and will have a different routine in the nursery. Have you had a chat with the staff there about it?

Thankyou for the helpful suggestions!

@DragonDoor he has mostly been prompted to go and try on the toilet. But has a couple of times said “wee toilet”
he got himself down from dinner and just sat on the potty to have a wee too, so he knows when he needs to go.
The staff are fab, I’m one of them. I’ve pre warned them all! They’ll all help out. I was just worried about the car. But thanks for the suggestions.

You shouldn't use anything to line the car seat. It can affect the performance of the seat in an accident. I use a pull up over underwear

shelbaba · 24/04/2023 10:46

I'd just wear pants don't confuse things. I've never had any a accidents in the car with either of my 2 while potty training.

For my first I was quite paranoid about it so I bought puppy pads and put them under her bum (as best I cld with the car seat).

Mamabear04 · 24/04/2023 11:40

Sit them on the toilet before you go and then towel on the car seat. I guess you just need to do it and if there's an accident think of it as a teachable moment ie "Pee/poo before getting in car"
