How the holy hell do you sleep training a baby that shares a room with a sibling?

Two DC, 3 1/2 and 16 months. Until recently DS2 had only ever fallen asleep in my or DH’s arms, at whatever time that happened, and we’d often have no evening at all as we’d still be trying to get him to sleep at gone 9pm.

We’re trying to sleep training him doing the gradual retreat thing but the problem is he just screams his head off, which was waking DS1 if he was asleep and upsetting him if he was awake. To solve that problem we’ve had to start getting DS1 to fall asleep in our bed and only putting him in his own bed once DS2 is asleep. The problem with this is that now DS1 wants go to bed in our room every night.

How the hell do we figure this out? In an ideal world we’d be able to put both boys to bed awake and just let them drift off by themselves - DS1 has never had any trouble doing this but we’re three weeks in with DS2 and getting nowhere 😭

It is hard.
We put DC1 in our bed every night and moved her when we went to bed. We didn't see that as a real problem, she was carried throughout without complaint (mostly).
Also, baby/ child ear defenders. Not joking.
