Cold/ virus - newborn. Please help

Please help as I’m freaking out 😭

Our LB is 8 days old. Since his arrival we’ve already had an overnight stay back in hospital due to jaundice and borderline low blood sugars which have improved since adding formula feeding.

My husband is coming down with a cold type virus. I’m petrified. I’m so scared baby is going to catch it and all I can think about is how vulnerable he is.

What do I do? Will he be okay? I want my husband to keep away and want to ask my mum to help me look after him but my husband thinks I’m being ridiculous and understandably he doesn’t want to miss out.

I just want to keep my baby safe and I’m feeling so distressed 😭

I know it's so hard not to worry but they are resilient I promise.

Just think about all the families with multiple children at nursery, bringing home every bug under the sun to newborns.

It happens and the vast majority of the time they are fine.

We all had COVID when mine was born and of course he got it as well. You just keep an eye, get saline drops for their nose if congested and a humidifier bis useful too (frida baby do a good one).

Babies have great immune systems. Newborns also have antibodies passed over from you via the placenta.
Getting infections only strengthens their immune system further.
Jaundice in newborns is very common and nothing to do with their immune systems.

My 2 week old just caught a virus off my toddler - I’ve got it too. It’s horrible and worrying but they usually don’t have any issues. Check NHS website for what to look out for.
And offer lots of breastfeeding to pass on antibodies!

Your husband can take reasonable precautions but honestly you can't avoid colds and things. I had a baby who was in hospital a couple of times as a baby - please don't let it make you super anxious. I did and I really regret wasting so much time worrying.

By the time I had my second I was much calmer - I think ds sneezed in her face the day she was born! She had a cold at about a week old, breast milk helped and saline spray.

I know it's really hard but they honestly are tougher than you think.

Keep breastfeeding as much as you can as your body will produce the protective antibodies for baby.

If baby does catch it they’ll probably just be a bit pissed off with a blocked up nose, so I’d get some saline nasal drop and a snot sucker (baby frida does one).
