Antibiotics for throat infection

My baby 9 months old, had a course of about 5.5 days of amoxicillin for a high temperature and cough. It was supposed to be 7 days but the bottle finished early. He seemed okay until today which was 4 days after the amoxicillin finished and his cough is worse than before. I took him to the Dr's and they've given him the same dose of amoxicillin. My worries are:

This course isn't going to be 7 days again so might not do the job again.

The bacteria came back stronger after 4 days and won't respond to the antibiotics. Does anyone have experience with this. Should I be asking the Dr for another prescription for longer?

Thank you

If the bottle finished early, did the pharmacy send the write amount? What is the dose in MLs and how many MLs were prescribed? Usually it's 10 days antibiotics for strep so might be that they should have given 2 bottles?

Concernedkay · 14/04/2023 21:43

@TheRookie

It's 100ml 250mg/5ml three times a day. The Dr said because he already had 5 days an extra 5 days is the equivalent to 10 days but there was 4-5 days break in between. I'm just worried it's not going to be sufficient enough again.

I think they should have prescribed 7 days in the first place and didn't give enough on the initial prescription. Hopefully another 5 days will be enough, if not they will try another antibiotic. Try not to worry, there are so many to try. If he is unwell, getting worse and you're worried, take him to A&E. Hope he feels better soon !

If the antibiotics didnt work the first time, they can prescribed a different type which is stronger.

My son been on so many, also this antibiotics can cause nappy rash 3 or 4 days after.

BananaPalm · 14/04/2023 22:20

I was in the same situation and after several visits to the GP which ended like yours did I had to go private to sort it out. One visit and my DH got prescribed the right amount of antibiotics. Instead of having a number of ineffective, short term courses being given at random by the GP... Sad

@TheRookie

Thank you, I really hope they work this time round 🙏🏼 yeah I just wish the dose was the right amount in the first place it's so upsetting and worrying when your child's not well but you're right there are other options x

@SteakChips yeah he's been prescribed the same ones and the same course. I really hope they work I'm so worried he'll get worse and I hate putting him through all this.

Your GP will be better to advise that MN... Hope little one gets better soon.

I have been through similar with my dd recently only with chest and ear infections. Constant courses of antibiotics that seem to work short term but then the symptoms reappear a few days after the course has finished. It's so upsetting. We've had one very strong course and I'm hoping that will put an end to it but if not I will be seeking a referral from the GP.

sproutsandparsnips · 14/04/2023 22:50

Was it for a throat infection? You say cough and high temp. If for chest infection 5 days is usually enough. It may be viral in which case antibiotics won't work and it needs to take its course. Hope he feels better soon.

Concernedkay · 14/04/2023 22:50

@BananaPalm were the short courses all amoxicillin 5 days? Do you remember what the antibiotics and dose was that ended up working and what your child diagnosed with? Thank you

@GreenFingersWouldBeHandy

Yes I did ask them and they think 5 days more should be enough I just hope they're right. Was asking mnet if any parents have experience and how it went

@sproutsandparsnips

Hi yes for throat. I think the first dr prescribed for chest infection but this doctor said it his throat which should be 7-10 days so this course is being prescribed as an extension of the last course. I was thinking the same that maybe it's viral but it hasn't gotten better with time, it got worse since yesterday 😔

DS (2) has just had a 10 day course for a throat infection. They were grim and I was struggling to get him to take them at all so I contacted the GP to see if there was an alternative and was told that new research suggests amoxicillin can make a throat infection worse rather than better which is why the doctor I saw at urgent care prescribed the grim one he did.
