3 year old swearing

Ever since roughly October last year my 3 year old son has been saying f* off. He turned 3 in November last year. I have tried ignoring it, asking him to use kind words, telling him we don't say that word, everything google has recommended I've tried. He says it everywhere. In context and out of context. Honestly it's getting me down so much! We went to the beach the other day and he said it on the lane train amongst other families and I was so embarrassed. I just feel lost and have no idea how to get him to stop! It's been over 5 months now, where do I go from here? 😭

Where is he hearing this sort of language?

You need to ensure no one is using this sort of language around him.

Give him plenty of praise and attention when he uses good language and completely ignore any bad language.

Don't negotiate, don't explain... just absolutely ignore bad language

Roxmum14 · 09/04/2023 13:15

@desqel thank you for your response. He unfortunately has heard it when visiting his dads house, although his dad has said our son has never said it there before. He only visits every other weekend and is with me all the other times and 100% has not and will not hear it here.

I have ignored it for the last month and it's getting progressively worse, he will say it 20+ times a day, that's not even an exaggeration! So I'm now unsure that ignoring it is the best idea.

He’s only saying it to get a reaction, if you ignore it completely he will get bored and stop.
You need to totally grey rock it though, ignore other people.

@Roxmum14 i wondered if your son stopped - i am having same issue :(

Roxmum14 · 01/07/2024 20:15

@Rattles1 hello, sorry for my very late response! My son eventually did stop. We went on holiday with family and he got out of the habit of saying it because he was out of home routine etc. not suggesting you take a holiday to get your child to stop but it worked for me 😂 it was a very very stressful 8 months of constant swearing so I really sympathise with you and hope that your child has stopped too! 🥺
