Formula preparation

Hi all,

Sorry if this sounds like a dumb question to ask but how do you prepare formula when you are out with your LO? Does the formula have to be room temperature or can you make this if the water is cooled down?
I’m an EBF first time mum so Formula is a complete new language for me.

Thank you!

We boil water and put it in a flask and take out bottles / the formula tub so we can make it up when we need it. If the timings are right, we make it as soon as we get somewhere so it’s got time to cool but if not, we might need the help of some cold water to stand it in to cool it (but checking for hot spots).

Take a carton/small bottle of ready made formula that you can buy and an empty bottle.

Or take hot water in a feeding bottle and store in an insulated bottle holder and add pre measured powder when required

Or take a bottle of formula you have made and chilled in the fridge for a couple of hours and keep it in a cool bag with an ice pack. It will be ok for 4 hours in these conditions.

Flask of hot water and a pre measured bottle of cold water.
Put in 1oz of hot water, add the powder. Then add the cold water.
This mimics what the prep machine does.
If she needs a feed within 2 hours of us going out then I make the bottle at home and take it with us.

Some people use ready made formula as it's the easiest way but it makes DD puke.

Hot water flask and another flask with just room temperature water. You can pre-measure the powder in the little pre-measuring cups or carry the tub of formula with you if you've got enough space. If I know I wouldn't be staying out too long before a feed I'd usually make the bottle from home and put it in a insulated bottle holder thingy. Make sure its consumed within 2 hours or so.

Flask of boiling water and a nuby rapid cool. Saves you carrying 2 flasks of water which can be heavy!

Measure out the water in the bottle first so you get the measurements right because the formula throws it off. Pour most the water into the rapid cool leaving a tiny bit to act as your hot shot. Add the formula to the bottle with the little bit of hot shot. Shake it up and add the cooled down water from the rapid cool.

Pre measured pots for formula or tablets if the brand you use make them.
