Ferber Naps only catnapping?!

I successfully sleep trained my 9 month old using Ferber 2 months ago and he’s cracked night time. I’m only just starting on naps but it’s not been going great. He’s cried max 30 mins (on and off, and with comforting in intervals) but he then only sleeps for 30 mins max. When contact napping, he could sleep for 1-1.5 hours. I need him to stop contact napping as I’m going back to work and his grandma will be looking after him but she can’t rock him to sleep.

For anyone who sleep trained for naps, how long did it take until naps lengthened? Very overtired baby on my hands.

I only sleep trained for the settling issue, but mine only started having longer naps at around 9 months. It was at the time he started crawling - is yours on the move yet?

The guide I followed said babies couldn't be resettled upon waking after 8 months, but it was only at crawling time that mine WOULD resettle. He was tired out and desperately needed more sleep. After a week or two of resettling, he was reliably sleeping 1.5-2 hour naps

What about rocking him in a buggy for naps? Then grandma can do it too.

@DragonbornMum He’s very mobile and bum shuffles around pretty well but not crawling yet.

When you say resettle, did you do anything to resettle, or he just resettled himself once he woke at 30 mins? I’ve been waiting 5ish mins before I go in and get him to see if he’ll go back to sleep but he never has. Spends the next couple of hours exhausted though and only managing 1-1.25 hours of total day sleep now 🙈🙈🙈

@BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz Unfortunately he’s never napped in his pram. He even hates going in his pram whilst awake 80% of the time. So that’s not really an option 😞

Maybe he'll start to tire himself out then! Fingers crossed for you!

I think my son is the exception, but if he woke and was distressed I would go into the room. Ewan the Sheep came on automatically; I would sit with my hand on his tummy gently patting in time with the heartbeat. No eye contact, no communication. 4 out of 5 times he'd fall asleep again.

He self-settled at the start of all naps without me in the room.

My guide said this wouldn't be possible for an older than 8 month old, but it actually was really successful for us. If you think it's worth a try then go for it, but don't be disappointed if it doesn't work.
