Toddler coughing at night

Any advice please. My 2.5 year old son keeps coughing at night, it sounds like a chesty cough and wakes him up. But he doesn’t have a cough at all during the daytime. I have given him some toddler cough syrup but it just isn’t shifting it. It’s been over a week.

Assuming not worth seeing a doctor and he wouldn’t have an infection. But I just can’t seem to help him sleep and get enough rest as he’s constantly coughing. Thought maybe it might be an allergy or something else?

Any advice is appreciated
thanks

We had exactly the same with DD and it was usually worse after a cold… a humidifier next to her bed definitely helped but didn’t solve it. Went to the dr not expecting anything and was given an inhaler. That has helped DD tremendously! It is worth going to the dr… the cough at night is typical of some childhood asthmas, so I am now led to believe.

You could also try putting a blanket under his mattress to prop him up slightly. My DD had had the cough for about 6 weeks by the time we went to the dr but wish we hadn’t left it so long

I did wonder about asthma. He has flare ups of eczema and I understand both are linked. Maybe a doctor trip is worth it

My little one had this, a brown inhaler stopped it. Had the inhaler for about 3 years and has grown out of it now.

Yes, needed the brown inhaler here too. It got worse to the point DC was waking 3 times a night and no water or Vix etc was helping. Suggest you see the GP.

DD had this but it was more of a dry cough than chesty. Diagnosed with asthma at 3yrs and had an inhaler for about 18months then grew out of it. She had RSV at 3 weeks old and suffered from croup a lot so I always wondered if there was a link. She's 12yo now and no issues whatsoever.

Put a dust mite encasement on the mattress and put all his bedding through a hot wash and then tumble dry it and wash it again. The drying kills the dust mites and then you have to wash them out. It sounds like he has developed a dust mite allergy and you might find the excema clears up too when you cut down on the exposure to dust mites
