How to help 5 year old improve social skills?

My 5 year old DS is starting to struggle a little with social situations. He’s had a tough run with me moving to a new city when I had him so didn’t have any friends we saw regularly, then we had to be really careful for the first 2 years of Covid because his Dad’s CEV. He’s had a few friends he’s played with a couple of times a week throughout most of this, but hasn’t met a variety of people so doesn’t really know what to do.

He’s bright and happy and confident, he doesn’t shy away from other kids at all but I’ve noticed that he always seems to be a bit of a tag-along when playing in groups and he tends to just echo what everybody else is saying without contributing anything.

What can we do to help him improve his social skills? He seems happy enough now but I worry that he’ll start to notice as he gets older that he’s never invited on play dates and is never any other kids first choice.

Are you able to invite a friend for tea or is not not advisable with his DF's condition?

Have you asked his Teacher how they think he manages socially and if he needs any support?
