hi dd is now 5 and i miss her so much since she started school, i feel really broody for another baby, although money is a bit tight and i need to convice dh.

what i wondered if any of you mums knew was, even as a sahm would i be entitled to claim anything like maternity allowence?
as that would make my dream possible?

or if i returned to work, how long would i need to work for, before trying for a baby
to either get employers materanity leave or maternity allowence

or what about if i did some sort of self employed work, how long would i need to do that for before being able to claim maternaty allowence

please, please help me make my dreams come true

do you really think its THAT easy to earn 112 quid EVERY week straight off in self employment? don't you think everyone would be doing it!

Seriously though, what are you going to do??

meemar · 13/02/2008 14:17

I do agree with others who have said that she is in for a shock if she thinks it's enought to just 'become self-employed'. There is a lot of work and hassle involved, so good luck.

ps that is £112 per week after tax, ni conts, vat payments (if applicable), capital gains allowances etc.

juuule · 13/02/2008 14:19

I can't see what is wrong with what op is thinking of doing, either. Meemar put it much better than I could.

broodymummy · 13/02/2008 14:24

yes i know it is because ive done it before

the thought of being self employed scares me enough, without having a pregnancy too, household chores to manage etc [shudders]

Being a SAHM is so much harder than working IMO. i'm looking forward to going back part time, just for a break. And when i eat my lunch it'll still be hot. And no frigging Iggle Piggle.

mrsruffallo · 13/02/2008 14:41

You have to work for 6 months, over 26 hours a week to claim sMP.
Its a good idea to get a temp job, which is what I had when pregnant with dc1.

mrsruffallo · 13/02/2008 14:43

I don't thinm it unfair if you temp!!There are lots of agencies looking for admin/receptionist for example

broodymummy · 13/02/2008 14:44

well thats me sorted then.
ill be working 6 months self employed

thanks for all the information and you have given me a good laugh, with your great work ethics of being on mumsnet whilst being paid to work!
if you get caught out and sacked,
maybe you should try and find a job as a paid hypocrite pmsl

anyway its time most of you left this thread, because youve gotta get your shopping ordered via the internet before your finished "working" for the day right?

Self-employ for 6 months? That's a silly suggestion!

SuperGrrrl · 13/02/2008 14:46

i'm not going anywhere while i still have a baby hanging off my boob.

SuperGrrrl · 13/02/2008 14:48

what on earth business could you just do for 6mths? baffling.

i reckon she's going to be an Avon lady. Or a topless mobile hairdresser...

SuperGrrrl · 13/02/2008 14:49

i might try the hairdresser one once i pass my driving test. Norks are in good shape. do you think anyone would notice that i can't cut hair though

SmartArse · 13/02/2008 14:50

Nope. They'll be too busy staring at your tits

SuperGrrrl · 13/02/2008 14:55

genius! i like meeting new people, and i like getting norks out. winner!

petrol costs would be a worry though

SmartArse · 13/02/2008 14:56

Perhaps you could just operate locally?? Then you don't waste time travelling. I think you've hit upon something there, SG ... Even my completely bald DH would probably sign up for your "services"!

SuperGrrrl · 13/02/2008 14:59

i'm sure there are enough bored men round here, i could do it on foot!

i'll get DHs beard trimmer for the baldies

VanillaPumpkin · 13/02/2008 15:44

BroodyMummy - I think you have a bad attitude I am afraid. What about those of us who are SAHM's and have disagreed with you. Why are you attacking the workers .
If you need/want a job then go get one. If you become pregnant whilst employed then great, I would say congratulations. What I find so hard to swallow is that you are intentionally going out there just so you can get the ma. I find that a very difficult view to justify.

well if you work for a while and pay into the system, then take mat pay from the system, can't see nowt wrong with that.
sounds like a good plan to me

indiechick · 13/02/2008 17:19

Broodymummy, I'm actually off sick today but because of the nature of my work I'm taking calls and writing stuff so as not to let my employer down.
I think you're attitude is appalling towards other mothers on here.

stinkycat · 13/02/2008 17:43

who actually pays mat pay anyway ? the goverment? or employers
i thought the employers paid the 1st 6 weeks 90% and the goverment the rest?

Spidermama · 13/02/2008 17:47

I'm with Vanilla and the others. It's a shocking attitude. Why should the taxpayer have to pay for you to stay at home and have children. The system wasn't meant for people like you who just don't fancy bothering to work.
