hi dd is now 5 and i miss her so much since she started school, i feel really broody for another baby, although money is a bit tight and i need to convice dh.

what i wondered if any of you mums knew was, even as a sahm would i be entitled to claim anything like maternity allowence?
as that would make my dream possible?

or if i returned to work, how long would i need to work for, before trying for a baby
to either get employers materanity leave or maternity allowence

or what about if i did some sort of self employed work, how long would i need to do that for before being able to claim maternaty allowence

please, please help me make my dreams come true

Broodymummy, I am self employed, I run a business from home I have the huge luxury of 10 days Maternity Leave, as can't afford to live on SMP and DH's part time wages, go get a job

Hi read the thread but feel I've missed something.

If broodymummy either gets a job, or becomes self-employed and claims SMP isn't she only getting what she's legally entitled to?

She will either have worked and earned enough contributions for SMP, or she won't get anything.

I don't get how this is a scam or fiddling the system.

Can someone explain please?!

sophiewd · 13/02/2008 13:56

I am doing exactly what I want to do

SuperGrrrl · 13/02/2008 13:57

i think the point was that it's wrong to get a job, when your sole intention is to get pregnant asap, leave and not go back.

meemar · 13/02/2008 14:00

But what if you need a job for 9 months?

broodymummy · 13/02/2008 14:05

totally agree meemar

personally i feel, that some these posters are probably feeling a little guilty with all the time they spend on here, and god knows what else when they are being paid to work.

there's a difference- by doing it with the maternity intention you get maternity pay, and the employer has to find and train someone else to take the place that's purposefully left. (and the someone else will probably be male)

Maveta · 13/02/2008 14:07

oh fgs it is NOT morally right. We all do things we shouldn't, fine. Yes, I am working and popping into MN from time to time. Think of it as cancelling out the fag breaks smokers take. But I know I shouldn't be on here when I'm working.

Maybe one day I'll find myself in your position, and think of doing the same thing, maybe, but at least I'd be honest with myself about it and admit I really shouldn't be doing it.

preggersagain · 13/02/2008 14:08

so glad i fell over this thread

Broody- i am on mumsnet because me and my dh over the years have both built up sucessful companies and are self employed- therefore i can do what the f**k i want with my time providing i am avaliable to my staff to assist them if there are problems.

Between me and dh on the 31st of last moth we paid over 90 grand in tax and vat to the revenue- i have just had newborn twins (26/12/07) but do i get ANY benefits? NO. am i asking for them NO- they are for people who need them NOT because i have paid into the system.

broodymummy · 13/02/2008 14:08

supergrrrl i will be self employed
so your your comments
"there's a difference- by doing it with the maternity intention you get maternity pay, and the employer has to find and train someone else to take the place that's purposefully left. (and the someone else will probably be male)"
are not valid

Preggers, what HEAVENLY babies! Hope you're getting some sleep/rest! [mile]

sophiewd · 13/02/2008 14:12

Sorry Broodymummy just want to make sure that you are prepared for being self employed, we run a very successful B&B and unfortunately you cannot predict when you become pregnant hence the fact that a short maternity leave this time but more time off over wwinter, just wanted you to be prepared that you cannot pick and choose when you work, you do not get paid if you have to take a day of sick, you will need insurance to cover any long term illness, and at the moment I am taking a break from the really boring job of reconciling bank statements with accounts. There have also been some hairy times financially but as your DH works then you should be OK If you are prepared for all that then good luck to you. Just out of curiosity have you thought of what you might do if you become self employed

Do people have a problem with MA/SMP being paid if the person has no intention of returning to work? Because that seems to be the big sticking point for many here.

With both my children I resigned "for maternity reasons" because I knew I wasn't planning on returning (and in the first case was moving 250 miles away as well, so would have left anyway) and wanted the school to be able to permanently fill the posts as soon as possible rather than appointing maternity leave cover.

Being pretty ignorant of these things when I was pregnant the first time, I assumed I would get nothing as I was not going to return. Not that the SMP wasn't very useful at the time of course.

Snaf · 13/02/2008 14:13

You've got an unpleasant shock awaiting you if that's what you think being self-employed is about

SuperGrrrl · 13/02/2008 14:13

you weren't crystal clear about that in your OP, were you? or some subsequent ones, if you look.

good for you if it works out, whatever it is.

meemar · 13/02/2008 14:15

I understand the points about it being unfair on employers. Especially a small business. But tbh businesses are guilty of treating pg women very badly when it comes to employment rights. So it works both ways if you are looking at the moral arguement.

If you need to earn money should you not get a job because you plan to become pregnant?

And if you are going to get a job, does it not make sense to try and earn the maximum contributions in order to have an income when you can no longer work?

I just don't think what broodymummy is planning to do is as bad as people are making out. Any work she does is contributing to the economy and she will be receiving what is legally hers if she is entitled to it.
