My 5 month old gets too hot and it's not even summer yet!!

It's been 10-12 degrees this week and when I take him out in his pram (lying down pushchair), he moans and cries. I have him in a thin long sleeve top and trousers, that's it. I took his socks off, rolled up his sleeves and today I ended up taking his trousers off! The only way I can cool him down is keep getting him out every 10 mins which is ridiculous!

I dont know what to do, it's not even hot yet! He has always been hot and his father is the same, he excessively sweats and overheats. Anyone else had this with their babies and have any tips?? Thanks!

I had a sweaty boy.
A relative in New Zealand sent me a sheepskin pram liner -sounds like it would be really warm but it actually kept him cool.
That, plus only ever dressing him in cotton, using cotton covers (& 100% cotton duvet covers/pillowcases when older) kept him as cool as possible. DH is the same. I’m always cold and have got 5 layers on whilst they are in T-shirts.

What makes you think he's hot? Does he feel hot to the touch?

HelloBunny · 23/03/2023 19:41

My son’s the same. So sweaty! He’s been like it since small. Hated those baby sleeping bags... Always dressed him in layers & kept them light, stripped them off. No tips really, just a nice bath every day!

Is he too hot if you touch his back? My first assumption would be is bored. I would try sitting him up first and see how he reacts.

I agree with this. It's probably not the clothes.

@Aoneslicesandwichisonlyahalfsandwich haha exactly the same, I feel the cold!thanks for the tips will Google the sheepskin!

@00100001 of course Ive touched him how else would I know he was too hot?! 🤦

@HelloBunny yes same!! I want to put him in just a short sleeve vest when it's this temp but I'm worried what other people will say as it probably looks quite bad such a young baby with hardly any clothes on in 10 degrees! It's crazy I'm there in a winter coat!

I knew typical Mumsnet people would be 'he isn't hot it's something else'. He IS hot, of course I check and I know my own baby thank you! Honestly 🙄

What a ridiculous question to ask op ? 🙄

My daughter was like this. Came out a sweaty little hot water bottle, and still like that at 6.

I just dressed her more lightly than I did my son. and make sure you have a fan for the summer.

HappyBirthdayLydia · 23/03/2023 20:58

Yep I have one of these children

Thin layers are your friend, cotton is best and a gilet rather than a winter coat. Cotton beanie hats or ear muffs/ headband rather than woolly hat and scarfs. Thin cotton gloves like running gloves rather than anything fleecy, woolly or lined and thick.

Keep ice packs in keep cool lunch boxes to help them cool down quickly in the summer, and a wet cloth to press on their head and wrists. Buggy fan is helpful too. Agree with a sheepskin to lay on. Consider an air conditioner for his room as the fans just don't cut it.

Aged 9, my DS is in shorts 99% of the time and sleeps in just pants whatever the time of year. You have 0.3 seconds to help him cool down when he's starting to get hot or else it's a meltdown. (Literally for him!) Loads of ice in drinks, cool showers, and he loves sitting by an open window for breeze even at ridiculous minus temperatures in winter.

His Dad is similar.
