Toddler traumatised with nappy rash

Wondering if anyone has any advice for dealing with this. DS is 2.5 and has never really had nappy rash until now. It's clearly causing him a lot of pain, and I don't really know how to help. It's to the point where he's shaking and crying every time we have to change him, and screaming when the wipes or flannel touch his bum. We're using cream and bathing daily to try and help it heal, but I feel awful that he's so traumatised by the whole thing, it's horrible to see him literally trembling with fear 😔

Have you smothered it in yellow metanium cream? (Watch out, it stains everything!)

Otherwise put down some towels and embrace some nappy free time to let it heal?

Nomaj · 22/03/2023 23:06

Nappy off time.

For the entire day if you can. It will make the world of difference.

SunsetBlue · 22/03/2023 23:06

Yellow metanium! Absolute miracles with that stuff.

But if he's got a raw bottom then be careful of infection... might need antibiotics.

I'd be doing as much nappy free time as possible, and see if you can encourage him to use the potty so he's not getting urine on the sore skin as often. Just water not wipes will also help, and leave him to air dry if you can, or perhaps a cool hairdryer.
If it's not clearing then a doctors trip just to rule out Thrush might be an idea.

elliejjtiny · 22/03/2023 23:09

Poor thing. Does he have teeth coming through? My son's wee seemed to turn to acid when he was teething.

Username721 · 22/03/2023 23:11

Yep, get the nappy off and it’ll be good in no time.

Of course you’ll be running around with anti-bac wipes all day but that’s probably easier for you than your baby being distressed.

Thesearmsofmine · 22/03/2023 23:11

Have you seen a GP? If it’s very bad it may well be worth checking as he could need a steroid cream or antiseptic cream if he has thrush. But I echo lots of nappy free time and only water for cleaning no soaps etc.

Fireyflies · 22/03/2023 23:16

A good time to start potty training surely?

ErikaReadsTheDailyMail · 22/03/2023 23:18

Nappy off
Cloth one on if needed with metanium- it's actually magic (but does stain EVERYTHING!)

APoppyLicks · 22/03/2023 23:19

Go to the Dr, if it's not clearing up it could need anti fungal cream or steroids.

Perfect time, let's start of potty training while a child is in pain and most likely in pain while passing stools...what a dumb comment.

nanodyne · 22/03/2023 23:22

Thanks everyone, will definitely try nappy free time - luckily hard floors so should save us from the worst of it. Will dispatch DH to acquire some yellow metanium first thing!

@Thesearmsofmine haven't seen the GP yet, will be doing so on Friday if no improvement.

@elliejjtiny no new teeth, dentist said he has all of them now (unfortunately, would be nice to have an obvious cause!)

It's will almost certainly heal before your eyes after using yellow metanium 😊

bravelittletiger · 22/03/2023 23:24

You have to take him to the doctor. He will need some special cream. Go tomorrow. It really can be a bit of an emergency as it's so painful and it can get infected.

Everafter20 · 22/03/2023 23:25

Second the yellow cream and also I would be giving some ibuprofen or Calpol for a few days if he is in that much pain. Hope it helps poor soul.

APoppyLicks · 22/03/2023 23:26

@nanodyne please don't wait until Friday, get him in to be seen tomorrow.

Ilovecrumpetseveryday · 22/03/2023 23:29

Metanium will help loads. Just to make you aware, Don’t apply too thick. It’s supposed to be applied thinly. It’s a miracle cream!

PineappleMom · 22/03/2023 23:31

Call the gp and ask for a prescription for severe nappy rash. It's basically thrush cream, but you need the low version for babies. It sorted my 9 month olds severe nappy rash out within one application. Although do use a few more times to control fully. A friends baby had the same so I gave a little to her and she used it twice and it cleared up. Clotramazole cream I think it's called.

nanodyne · 22/03/2023 23:34

@PineappleMom oh we have some of this already because his baby brother had a bit of a rash under his arm a month or so ago! Did the GP look at your baby's bum or prescribe over the phone?

Not wanting to sound like a smug arse but we got all 4 of ours out of nappies (in the day for 3 of them, the eldest not until much much older) by 2.3 months so worth a go. Mainly because they all had issues with nappy rash.

Mine reacted to metanium. But found Bepanthan (the cream of heaven) amazing. Soothing and gentle. Still use of for most skin irritations!

Justyouwaitandseeagain · 22/03/2023 23:41

I hear a lot of people recommend Yellow metanium but we always used bepanthen with great success. Agree with calpol, calprofen or even some piriton which can help reduce the swelling and irritation. Definitely speak with a doctor if it doesn't clear up overnight. I wouldn't use any specialist creams without a doctors instruction.

Adrelaxzz · 22/03/2023 23:41

Also use no soap/cleaning products. I have very sensitive skin and know what it feels like!

Pixiedust1234 · 22/03/2023 23:56

I'm adding my voice to nappy off time, also no wipes or soap, just plain warm water for wiping him down or in the bath. I also find flannels can be a bit rough so you need something smoother or just use the flannel to pat the area. I always used sudocrem on mine which worked. My eldests nappy rash got so bad that she bled from it but we soon got it under control doing the above. I think not using the wipes helped the most.

@Fireyflies
Actually it's a great comment.
It's how my oldest was potty trained. He didn't want a nappy on ever again.
There's no need to be rude to @APoppyLicks .

Train007 · 23/03/2023 00:18

Personally I wouldn’t be even considering potty training whilst the poor little guy is uncomfortable! Wait until the spring / summer when everything is relaxed.
