Toddler traumatised with nappy rash

Wondering if anyone has any advice for dealing with this. DS is 2.5 and has never really had nappy rash until now. It's clearly causing him a lot of pain, and I don't really know how to help. It's to the point where he's shaking and crying every time we have to change him, and screaming when the wipes or flannel touch his bum. We're using cream and bathing daily to try and help it heal, but I feel awful that he's so traumatised by the whole thing, it's horrible to see him literally trembling with fear 😔

I found large cotton wool squares dampened with warm water or sudocreme much better than wipes at preventing a sore nappy area. I only used wipes (unscented waterwipes) when out and about.
Some good ideas above. Hope your little one feels better soon. It's so strssful for you both.

Please don’t use wet wipes, even plain ones they are the work of the devil. Next time you have a coke and sore nose after wiping, use one on your face. Holy Jesus it stings. That’s why toddlers squirm when you wipe their face and they are evil on nappy rash. Slather petroleum jelly when he’s clean so the next poo slides off with no abrasion

Vaseline! Couldn’t remember the name…..

Was also going to say wipes really sting. I used to wash them under warm water before using them generally as they seemed so harsh. Hope it gets better soon .

I'm going through this right now. Ds is refusing nappies on. My bed has been peed on Tod knows how many times as the second I lie him down for a change he's flipped up and starts pissing the couch/bed/in front of the tv
We are doing:
Yellow cream as pp's mentioned (avoid boy bits as it makes their (ds's) willy tight and sore due to dryness)
Apply thin layer to so you can see the skin lightly underneath
Change nappy every hour (set a timer)
Standing more or siting in high chair for long
No wipes. Warm washcloth and cotton wool for dirty nappies
No bubble bath only unperfumed unscented soap

LadyJ2023 · 23/03/2023 02:51

If its that bad why haven't you had him to a drs by now...sounds like severe eczema which our 2 yr old got after 24hrs of no improvement went to drs and they gave different cream and within hours the red had almost gone and he was happy baby again

cucumberegg · 23/03/2023 03:05

Slightly off topic but if you scrub the metanium stains with fairy liquid before washing they come right off. Have done this more times than I'd like to think!

redmimi · 23/03/2023 03:18

Try using a bit of cornflour like talcum powder. Sounds odd but worked wonders for us.

Drinkinggreentea · 23/03/2023 03:49

Use cotton wool rather than wipes. Wipes are absolutely terrible.

happygolucky42 · 23/03/2023 04:28

It could be thrust. See your dr. My LO had this and canestan clearer it up over night! I had no idea babies could get it.

Vaseline! Couldn’t remember the name…..

Yes! Vaseline is great.

nanodyne · 23/03/2023 09:16

Good point on the wet wipes for those suggesting, will switch to cotton wool pads for now.

@LadyJ2023 he only started with the shaking last night, (he's always cried at nappy change, he hates it) so too late to call the GP. We're going to see emergency GP today so hopefully get something sorted cream-wise.

Perfect time, let's start of potty training while a child is in pain and most likely in pain while passing stools...what a dumb comment.

It’s you that sounds dumb. And a bit of a dickhead too. Where did the op say he’s in pain passing stools? Stop making things up. And it’s the nappies that have caused the issue in the first place.
Op I agree with giving potty training a go.

I know it’s a typo, but having coke and a sore nose made me laugh 😂

Me too 🤣

BlueBunting · 23/03/2023 11:40

@User13579367337 and @ShirleyPhallus i just snorted and had I explain to DH why. Best autocorrect fail ever
sorry OP!

nanodyne · 23/03/2023 11:59

Haha totally missed that typo 😂

We've been nappy free all morning and he's been using the potty successfully. Waiting for a call back from 111 (no appointments left 😑), he's got the metanium on and has had some Calpol. Thanks so much for all the advice, he already seems more comfortable and relaxed.

Wonderful news OP. Its awful to see our precious babies in such pain but if he's happier already then you are definitely doing the right things, with the added bonus of successful potty training!

PineappleMom · 23/03/2023 16:04

nanodyne · 22/03/2023 23:34

@PineappleMom oh we have some of this already because his baby brother had a bit of a rash under his arm a month or so ago! Did the GP look at your baby's bum or prescribe over the phone?

Sorry for the delay in responding; it was a phone call as I mentioned that the pharmacist had suggested I call and request the cream. So it saved them an appointment too. Just tell them a pharmacist said to request-ours didn't even check her, they should be able to trust you at this point for judging nappy rash. :)

feckingknackered · 23/03/2023 16:35

I don't use any wipes and shower off his bottom when needed instead the leave the nappy off

Maray1967 · 23/03/2023 19:00

Get rid of the wipes, folks, other than for when you’re out and about - they’re bloody awful. Use water and cotton wool.

Margo34 · 23/03/2023 19:15

@nanodyne mix a little of yellow metanium with some vaseline to make a paste - by itself the yellow metanium can be quite abrasive if the skin is already sore and painful! You really don't need much but it does make the world of difference. It does make quite a mess though so don't apply then shave nappy free time 🙈

Margo34 · 23/03/2023 19:20

*have, not shave 😆

mumoffourminimes · 23/03/2023 19:25

Fireyflies · 22/03/2023 23:16

A good time to start potty training surely?

Exactly what I was thinking

Spottybluepyjamas · 23/03/2023 19:26

Nappy off for as long as you can and use metanium until it goes, and stop using wipes for good. Use cotton wool and linament instead - we've never had even the tiniest nappy rash since doing this. Good luck, hope it clears up soon!
