Is it normal for a 12 week old to sleep through the night

Usually my 12 week old will wake me up once or twice in the night but last night she didn’t wake me up at all sleeping from 9pm to 6am! I actually missed her so much when we woke up. I’m not sure if this is just a one off, is it normal for a baby this age to sleep through? We were out in fresh air yesterday for a quite a long time by the sea and also it was more warm in the room last night than usual so I’m not sure if these factors in but is this normal?

I wouldn't say normal, as in not common. But also not unheard of. Enjoy it while you can, as you never know with babies!

NeverTrustAPoliceman · 22/03/2023 06:53

One of my DC was regularly sleeping through at that age and apparently I was the same.

Our DD1 slept all through the night from 8/9 weeks. Might be a one off, might not be- take it while it lasts Grin

Congratulations! My son first slept through at 9 weeks. It's uncommon but not unheard of, and it won't be every night so enjoy while it lasts!

Paperexcelandpens · 22/03/2023 06:55

My ds slept through at that age and still loves sleep now at 13.

cactusbabe · 22/03/2023 06:56

My boy did this until the sleep regression (which he had at 5months so I thought I was in the clear as everyone said 4months!) when he then woke up every 50mins. So enjoy it as it may not last! (Sorry to the the voice of doom haha)

Twizbe · 22/03/2023 06:56

Yep, can happen, can be a one off, can be the start of a new pattern.

My second was sleeping 10pm to 5am from about 8 weeks.

Enjoy the sleep.

RampantIvy · 22/03/2023 07:01

DD first slept through at 9 months. I woke up in a panci because I hadn't been woken up. She had health issues so there was always the extra worry, but she was fine.

Binfluencer · 22/03/2023 07:12

One of mine did, then the four month sleep regression hit!! Rest while you can!

cptartapp · 22/03/2023 07:38

DS1 slept through the night consistently from 13 weeks. DS2 a month later.

Keeween · 22/03/2023 07:40

I don’t know about normal, but my boy was reliably sleeping through at that age and had been for a couple of weeks I think. He did get hit by the sleep regression at 5 months and that took a while to shake but then he was back to all night through and here we are at 18 months and he’s still a cracking sleeper. Here’s hoping for the same for you!

ShippingNews · 22/03/2023 07:40

Both of mine slept all night from about 8 weeks. There isn't any " normal" where it comes to babies. Enjoy it while you can !

FlounderingFruitcake · 22/03/2023 07:45

Both of mine did. My now 6YO slept through consistently from 8 weeks old and I can count the number of night wakes she’s had since on 1 hand. Her younger brother who is now 2 stopped night feeds at the same age and at 12 weeks sometimes slept through, sometimes needed a 3am dummy replace so could do it but far less consistently. He’s also but had a few blips, or regressions if you will, along the way so we’ve sleep trained a few times to get him back on track. There’s a huge range of normal! Hopefully it lasts for you but don’t be surprised if it doesn’t, baby sleep isn’t always linear.

IHeartGeneHunt · 22/03/2023 07:46

Mine slept 7-7 from the start and still does at 4, I was very lucky!

nuttynet · 22/03/2023 07:47

As long as baby is feeding well when awake, putting on weight and wet nappies, I think it's fine

Enjoy your sleep

Bumply · 22/03/2023 08:40

Ds1 first slept through at 12 weeks. Although that meant about 7 hours of solid sleep after a night feed

SomePeopleAreJustBloodyStupid · 22/03/2023 08:41

It's uncommon, so enjoy it while it lasts. My 2 didn't sleep through the night until they started school!!

specialkallday · 22/03/2023 08:45

OP this is totally normal. Ignore the previous person who said it's not normal but unheard of. It's very much heard of.

My DS slept through from 8 weeks, I think it helped he was FF. lots of people say it makes no difference, but I think that's because BF is so heavily promoted, but I would say formula helps fill them up and everyone gets better sleep for it!

Not true. There's no evidence that formula helps them sleep longer.

My good sleeper was the exclusively breastfed one.

I have a 15 week old who starting sleeping through at 2 weeks. The health visitor sent me to the GP because "that's not normal for a healthy baby", the GP just took one look at her and said "she's just a chilled out baby", she is gaining wait, is alert when she is awake, so I'm enjoying it while it lasts and not taking it for granted.
My eldest is 3.5 and still doesn't sleep through the night, they are all different.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 22/03/2023 09:20

DD1 at 8 weeks was sleeping 6 hours. By 12 weeks she went through solidly for 12 hours, sometimes more.

SophiaSW1 · 22/03/2023 09:38

Mine did for quite a while from 8 weeks. Really I would just enjoy it while it lasts. With babies pretty much everything is a phase. Things change all the time so just enjoy the sleep while you can Smile

Phoebo · 22/03/2023 09:39

It's rare, but it happens. As long as your baby is a healthy weight, enjoy!! 🥳
