Worried 9 Year old DD has an ED

Does anyone have any experience with this?

She is 9, very skinny, will live off sweets choc and junk if i let her. Never wants to eat actual food. Always has some sort of excuse, says she's gone off xyz. Honestly there is hardly anything she will eat.

No offence but the old school mentality of "if she doesn't eat her dinner she goes to bed hungry" doesn't sit right with me so I'm not after that kind of response.

Ideally looking for advice from someone experienced. I really worry about how to handle it I dont want to make her weird about food

Could you post what she actually eats in a typical couple of days?

You could Google "beat" the eating disorder charity.

Mateyduck · 12/03/2023 18:42

Does she have a favourite meal?

Just a thought OP, but if she is happy eating junk food but not freshly prepared food, I'd look to rule out emetophobia (fear of vomiting). It can look a lot like ED in the early stages. Best of luck.

Has she been like this her whole life or is it recent?

I'd stop buying the junk food so it's not an option. As a child I wouldn't have eaten meals either if I knew I could eat junk instead.
Being skinny at 9 is normal, you should be able to see a child's ribs at that age. Check out the stuff on ARFID though if you think it's more than just preferring to eat junk over healthy food.

I was going to ask the same. My DD has been like this since about one.

Have a look at ARFID.
