DD's illness record seems to be considerably different to both of her cousins and a friend's DC by the same age, and so I'm wondering what the wider picture looks like to figure out if it's us who are the anomaly or them (and where better to ask than MN).

Ours is 11 months and been mildly ill once after vaccines. I don’t think there’s a norm really , our eldest was ill so many more times and had ear infections, temperatures, etc .

2 kids, neither were sick in their first year bar a minor cold or two.

BertieBotts · 11/03/2023 16:28

1.5yo, more times than I can count.

This year is much worse than normal because of the post lockdown effect apparently. I have older children and they were rarely ill in their first year.

DD has just turned 1. She's our second child. Honestly I don't think she's been properly well since starting nursery 2 months ago. Big after bug after bug. She leaves a constant trail of snot everywhere she goes. She's perfectly happy during the day but we've had a few bad nights

LaFemmeDamnee · 11/03/2023 16:34

DD was rarely ill. DS was ill with so many bouts of bronchiolitis and other things we got phoned by support services asking about our frequent a&e attendance. They're still the same. DD had one day off school with a d&v bug. DS was off the entire week and lost a ton of weight.

My DC is 15months only ever had 1 cold. Haven't got other babies within the family. We do go to play groups but not all the time.

VivaVivaa · 11/03/2023 16:35

1, possibly 2 colds before the age of 1. Nothing else. DS was born at the start of lockdown. We made up for it swiftly on starting nursery. My nephew got a lot more as a baby as he has 2 nursery/school aged siblings who bought lots home.

I think the first winter a baby / toddler spends in childcare they usually catch every single thing going around! But after that it tends to calm down a bit- it did with my two anyway.

Pre covid will likely be different to answers from those who had small children during covid.

Mine are now at upper end of primary school. Oldest was ill more times than I could count (think 15+ times). Youngest 10+ times starting at 11 days old with a virus he picked up from the younger one (ended up in hospital for 3 nights).

Neither get ill very frequently any more.

DragonbornMum · 11/03/2023 16:55

19 mo old has been ill once in his life. He has also had a runny nose and a little cough, but not been properly ill so I'm not counting it

shivawn · 11/03/2023 16:55

My son is 18 months old and has been sick twice, a cold at 4 months and covid at 9 months. Never needed to visit the doctors other than for vaccines etc. Never had nappy rash or constipation and has never had a temperature other than when he had covid.

I don't think there's any normal amount of times for kids to get sick.

shivawn · 11/03/2023 17:00

Just to add that my son doesn't go to creche so would probably have picked up more bugs if he did. We do go to a lot of playgroups and classes though.

Although most responses here are from posters who's kids are rarely sick, in my experience from a large mom's group I'm in it's very normal for young children to pick up one bug after another.

baxtersm · 11/03/2023 17:06

You're going to hate me but 11 months and never been sick! Never had a sleepless night, has 6 teeth and never even knew when he was teething. My other babies weren't the same though
