Potty training... ugh

It's not going so well but for weird reasons.
DS is 3 and a half. Late I know. He has a speech delay and I suspect inattentive adhd. He's also absolutely the most anxious and sensitive child ever I don't know why.
Anyway we started yesterday. We put him into pants at 7am and by 2pm he was still holding it in. Put him in the bath which finally induced him to pee. One other accident later in the day then bedtime and pull up overnight.
Today carried on. Morning was going pretty well. We put the potty in the toilet. He waited until we'd all left the vicinity then peed (completely missed the potty and all over the floor but it's the thought that counts).
We left for a regular class we do every week shortly after that and he pooped his pants in the car which I only realised when he climbed down and I saw. Had to turn around to come home. I was prepared for a pee accident but not that!
He was very upset to miss his class and I think he thought I was punishing him. I tried to explain I wasn't and I wasn't angry at all.
Anyway he clearly has control because now when he needs to pee he's leaving the room, closing the door and doing it in his pants. Can't induce him to sit on the potty at all anymore.
What do I do? Should I give up and revisit later? Should I persevere? Has anyone had this particular issue before? Help!

This is a really helpful organisation, they even have a helpline. www.eric.org.uk. Good luck, potty training has been my least loved part of parenting...

And the Eric site has pages to support parents of children with additional needs too.

Thanks for the link. Hoping it sheds some light!
