Amoxicillin 5mg 3 times a day for 4 month old?

4 month old DS has a viral infection and the GP prescribed amoxicillin 5mg 3x a day. Does this sound okay? Idk why but I think it’s too much for a 4 month old?

You could always ask a pharmacist and they’d see if it was a mistake, but asking strangers on mumsnet rather than trusting the GP is not the way to go.

Antibiotics only work on bacterial infections.

A pharmacist will have checked the prescription but if your concerned ring a late night/ 24 hour pharmacy and ask them if it’s ok.

Go with your gut and call somewhere to ask.

I didn't think antibiotics treated viral or have I got that wrong?

I came on to say exactly this.

Mumsnet is great. It's not a replacement for asking the relevant, medically qualified people. People who will have seen your DS, know his weight and what condition he has.

Ask a pharmacist. Check with your GP. Don't ask strangers on the internet.

Bnf says 125 mg, 3 times a day.

HcP here - please call 111 or consult a pharmacist.

I’m no doctor but just making you aware my baby was prescribed flucloxacillin for an infection at 4 month old. I had to give 5ml 4 times a day for 5 days - which was a bloody challenge as he had to have an empty stomach and the kid ate every 2 hours 😂 the doctor did say as long as we managed to get some in his system which we did and the infection cleared up x

Do you mean 5ml three times a day? Because assuming its 125mg/5ml strength that would be the correct dose. Maximum dose is 30mg/kg three times a day, so if he is for example 6kg he is still well under the maximum.

LadyWithLapdog · 10/03/2023 21:55

Is it 5ml (containing 125mg)? Check it out properly, you don’t want to give too little or too much.

Breadhead1 · 10/03/2023 22:09

My ds is 8 and on 10ml 3 x a day. Gp told me that the amount has been increased very recently and not to be alarmed if it seems more than previously. Double check with pharmacy if concerned though

OP is it 125mg strength? If yes, it's usually provided in the 125mg/5ml dose, so your baby will be on the correct dose.
