Cradle cap 2 year old!

Can anybody offer any advice?
When my two-year-old was a baby he suffered really badly with cradle cap. Like it was really intense, even saw a consultant because it was so bad. Anyway he didn't need any intervention and it went away on its own.
A few months ago I noticed a really big clump of cradle cap on the top of his head. I never seen anything like it, it was this if a piece of chewing gum had attached to his scalp. Anyway the lump actually just came away but all the hair that was inside of it came away as by leaving a bold spot.
Recently I've noticed the second spot of cradle cap in a separate section of his head. I've been so nervous about what to do and how to get rid of it because it's slightly bigger than the last one and he's gonna end up with another bald spot. I've been trying to condition massage comb but it hasn't gone away. I've tried to scratch it off this evening A bit has come away and yet again the hair has come away with it.
Does anyone have any suggestions of what I can do to prevent this and how to get the rest off?

Dentinox shampoo and coconut oil.

MintGreenLife · 10/03/2023 19:22

@midnightblue12 my 20mo still gets cradle cap. We use a shampoo that’s really helped to reduce it. I can find the link if this is of interest?

My almost 5 year old has dreadful cradle cap. Not sure how to get rid as we’ve tried lots!

@YouBoggleMyMind that’s it, Detinox!

DS had this for years. Does he have dry skin in his body at all?

We have tried a lot of things and the best thing we have ever tried is Neutrogena Sensitive Scalp.

Thank you all!
I've tried dentinox and it seemed to help as a Baby but now it just makes his hair dreadful 😔

If the hair comes away with the cradle cap then I’d assume it wasn’t really attached to the scalp anymore. Hairs do fall out in cycles, so there’s not necessarily anything else going on except the cradle cap keeping it stuck on his head after the roots have detached. And presumably the hair will grow back once the cradle cap is no longer in the way of new growth?

Letstaketotheskies · 10/03/2023 19:34

Has the hair started to grow back on the last bald spot?

I'd advise seeing a GP. My 5 year old also had it badly, and it has resulted in hair loss over the years. Finally went to the GP and they said it should have cleared up by now and prescribed some medicated shampoo (not dentinox - that didn't work for us) and so far so good.

Baby oil, 30 minutes before bath time. Worked a treat!

rockpoolingtogether · 10/03/2023 19:43

I peeled it off when baby was younger and used a toothbrush to loosen it

I'm not sure I'm going to check when he's asleep as he doesn't like me looking 🙈 I really hope it has grown back :(

Would something like head and shoulders work do you think?

I used to use coconut oil but he's a bit of a handful and he wouldn't allow me to sit down now putting it in his hair before a bath :( I'm lucky if I'm allowed to brush it!

Head and shoulders was the solution here 😊

Genevie82 · 10/03/2023 19:53

@rockpoolingtogether

This. An old school approach OP I used olive oil or baby oil left on for a few hours massaged into scalp then slowly just rubbed it off with a toothbrush.. it can look abit red afterwards but very effective.

Defaultuser · 10/03/2023 19:59

My 4 year old used to still get what looked like cradle cap until recently. I stopped using shampoo and just rinsed his hair with water - seemed to do the trick and his hair isn't dirty!

Vintagegoth · 10/03/2023 19:59

You can get a product called Loyon which softens it and allows it to be washed /brushed out of the hair without too much damage to the scalp or follicles. I use it on my 9 yo who gets flare ups of cradle cap from time to time

Definitely head and shoulders ! Only thing that worked

midnightblue12 · 10/03/2023 20:01

I've just checked his scalp and I think that the old bald patch has started to regrow but definitely some more cradle cap forming.
I've been rubbing the new section and a clump has come away, with hair loss again.
I'm getting really worried now :(
He has such thick long hair, it's hard to see what's going on under neath it all!

This is the new spot.
It came away very easily :(

Thinking of getting some head and shoulders tomorrow to try.
Looking at his scalp there cradle cap everywhere!

My son suffered badly from cradle cap/dandruff when he was about two. My mother in law smeared vaseline over all the affected areas in the morning. We washed his hair at night and gently combed it and it all came off in chunks. Never came back and his scalp is in perfect condition now. The vaseline looks horrible throughout the day but it was so worth it!

ReadtheReviews · 10/03/2023 20:10

Youboggle has it.
That said, both mine had nits recently and the oily nit treatment plus the scrapey nit comb got rid of all my 2year old's cradlecap as a bonus!

Bobbybobbins · 10/03/2023 20:11

We had this too. Using olive oil to soften and remove the patches and a medicated shampoo at the same time got rid of it.

GlamorousBadger · 10/03/2023 20:21

My daughter suffered with exactly the same, hair coming away with the patches. We tried everything up until she was 5. Read somewhere recommending the Lush Soak and Float bar and it has now all gone and stayed away, the same only thing that really worked!

ABlindAssassin · 10/03/2023 20:40

DS2 had this! Dentinox didn't work but we got Nizoral over the counter and combed it really thoroughly with a fine tooth comb after each wash. It took a few weeks but it all went away and hasn't come back!
