How long do your kids have a fever for?

My 3 year old is on day 4 of fevers, ranging from 37.7 to 38.8. He is very snotty and has a chesty sounding cough but doesn’t appear to be producing anything from it.

We were actually in A&E with him on Saturday as he had a non blanching rash on his face but they said they weren’t concerned and it has since disappeared. He didn’t have the fever back then. The GP has also seen him, listened to chest and said it sounds clear.

Whenever he’s had a fever in the past it’s usually gone by day 2/3, so I’m slightly concerned it’s still present. He’s fine in himself albeit clearly sick with something (snot etc)

How long have fevers lasted in your kids? I’m tempted to ring the GP tomorrow if he’s still got it since it’ll be day 5.

Does his temp come down with Calpol/Ibuprofen?
If so, I personally wouldn't be too concerned. It's quite a low grade fever by the sounds of it and you say he is otherwise well. But if you're worried, obviously your GP is best placed to advise and not a random of mumsnet.
My kids have had viruses/temps ranging from 24hrs to 5 days.

NHS advice is to see a doctor after day 5. My youngest has had a few viruses recently where her fever has lasted longer than this and she has needed to checked over. The fevers lasted between 6 and 7 days.

9 days turned out to be rsv. We were sent to hospital on day 6 by gp. They did bloods and viral swabs etc.

I tend to see a Dr on day 3 with a temp and no sign of improvement. Everytime I’ve done this so far they’ve needed antibiotics for something like tonsillitis/chest infection etc. So i wouldn’t blame you for going back OP. How are they in themselves?

Haven’t been giving Calpol. He hates it and is still playing all day so not forcing it.

I will defo speak to the GP again tomorrow then! The cough is really horrible, he sounds in pain when it’s a bad coughing fit, almost forcing the cough out at the end. But, like I said, 2 doctors have listened to his chest and said it’s fine.

@Antihistamine62 I’ve just looked up the symptoms, I would say it’s pretty fitting apart from him still playing non stop all day.

Presumably there wasn’t actually any treatment for it anyway!?

Day 5 today and thankfully his temp has so far been normal! Mine, on the other hand….. 😂 Starting to creep up. Joy!
