8 year wants old rainbow friends party - yes or no?

As above my 8 year old wants a rainbow friend themed party for his birthday. He’s never watched or played it but he knows about it from school. He’s really keen and I feel mean but I worry that it’s essentially about the Roblox game where these characters kill you. So it feels not suitable for an 8 year old. To clarify they won’t be playing it but he wants a themed cake, stickers etc. I still feel like it’s not really suitable. Any thoughts? How would you feel about your 8 year old going to a rainbow friends themed party?

"Rainbow Friends is a Roblox horror experience that joins games like Piggy, Five Nights at Freddy's, Poppy Playtime, and others, in taking something seemingly nice and friendly and turning it into a terrifying nightmare."

"What is Rainbow Friends? Rainbow Friends is a Roblox horror experience in which you play as an unnamed child who has been kidnapped during a school trip to an amusement park called Odd World."

Sounds really inappropriate for your son and other kids of the same age.... I certainly wouldn't expect other parents to be happy about it if they aren't already aware of it.

Icecreamandapplepie · 28/02/2023 20:34

No my children would not be attending. Anf I would judge you.

Why don't you just say no.

AmandaClare · 28/02/2023 20:35

Can’t see an issue with a themed birthday cake.

Yes that sound La pretty awful, thanks for sharing.

God, that sounds horrific. If that is the kind of thing my 3 year old will be hearing about at school in 5 years time, I would rather she didn't go to school. How bloody depressing.

And in case it's not obvious, YABU - of course you can't theme his party around something so awful.

BarbaraVineFan · 28/02/2023 20:38

Sorry, just realised this isn't AIBU - but my point still stands OP

Smilingon · 28/02/2023 20:40

Don’t worry, it’s pretty innocent. He doesn’t even know what Rainbow Friends are beyond the images of them. They find out about all sorts of things and I guess it’s a way of them building social capital

Thanks for everyone’s opinion. Useful as a temperature test

I wouldn't know what it was, but might Google out of curiosity if it was on the invite or we got stickers of it in the party bag etc. Once I discovered what it was, I would judge you, I'm afraid. It sounds horrendous.

I know an 8yo who has several Poppy toys (I'm guessing the Poppy mentioned by a pp is that pointy-toothed monster but there's no way I'm looking it up to see if I'm right!). I totally judge her mum for buying her those as I think they're awful for such a young child. This girl has also watched the whole series of Wednesday, too, and regales us of the storylines. I just don't think it's appropriate at 8!

Yfory · 28/02/2023 20:49

If he doesnt know what its really about then even more reason why its not a suitable choice.

Yep, this is where I would be. I would probably decline the invite if I knew in advance what the party "theme" was.

From your thread title I thought your son wanted a Zippy & George themed cake or something, perhaps with a guest appearance of Bungle. That would be a much better party.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 28/02/2023 21:00

Sorry but I'd keep 8yo away from this. And I'd say no to any of mine if they asked for it and explain why. Social capital is not the be all and end all.

That's exactly what I thought and I was so impressed with the retro aspect of it

TooBigForMyBoots · 28/02/2023 21:02

I think it's fine @Smilingon. Most, if not all of his 8yo friends (and their parents🤦‍♀️) will be aware of Rainbow Friends. Lankybox never stop banging on about them.🙄

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 28/02/2023 23:23

I would have no idea what it was and therefore wouldn't have a problem tbh. I wouldn't google Rainbow Friends. It sounds innocent enough, and it's a birthday party.

TiinkerJ · 25/02/2024 07:50

So as much as the game sounds horrible, it’s super tame. The monsters do try and find you, it’s like a game of hide and seek.

There’s nothing gory about it and even when they catch you, the game ends (you died).

I think if he hasn’t played it there’s not much point doing a themed party for it. Ask him what other things he’s into and try to find an alternative.

My son has asked for a Rainbow Friends theme for his birthday and I’ll most likely do it, it’s just decorations after all.

MissingMoominMamma · 25/02/2024 07:53

Just say no and ask for a second choice.

PSEnny · 25/02/2024 07:54

My DD knows what rainbow friends are from school mates talking about them, the kids who talk about them are on the poorer end of being badly behaved and I’m assuming have unchecked access to inappropriate gaming. I would not let my child have a rainbow friends themed party.
The content of Roblox is appropriate for ages 13+ and it is well known that this platform is used to inappropriately target children.

MotorwayDiva · 25/02/2024 08:04

DD doesn't play roblox, due to the online chat, but is totally aware of rainbow friends, what they are and asked for the characters to play with.
I've watch some footage and it is actually tame. I would have no issue with a rainbow friends theme, and have in fact been to a rainbow themed party. It's just a cake at end of day x

The party was a year ago, I’m sure she’s handled it by now

Whoops I think it was me who restarted this 🤣 didn’t pay attention to dates! Can you tell I’m new to this!

EasternStandard · 25/02/2024 08:15

Go with something else

NewDogOwner · 25/02/2024 08:20

A lot of parents would be horrified and may not want their child to come. I would assume your child was playing the game and may want to act out violent role play and games in the party and at school. I would not encourage a friendship with your child moving forward.

Choose something else.
