When to worry - baby sitting up

Cluelessfirstimer · 24/02/2023 20:40

9 month old cant sit up. He can sit in a high chair but if you put him in a sitting position he just flails around and falls back.

Hes crawling and can stand himself up but totally failing at getting him to sit up independently.

When do I worry? Is this normal?? I've been trying to practice with him all week but zero interest.

Any advice/thoughts are welcome. Am I just being silly? Did message the HV but it's been a week and counting so far.

If he is crawling and pulling to stand I really wouldn't panic. A friends baby didn't sit up until he was over 10 months. He could move around by rolling and commando crawling so I guess there was no benefit to him being able to sit in one place.

Two of mine walked long before the could sit up. They used to kneel to do things but seemed to have very pointy bottoms.

It makes me feel so much better hearing others have had little ones crawl and stand before sitting etc too. Just letting the stupid comments from people get to me🙄 need to get better at that. He crawls like a maniac and pulls up on anything he can get his hands on so looks like he just wants to be a mover!

Thanks lovlies ❤️❤️

the main reason that sitting up is a “milestone” of note is because you have to have semi-decent muscle tone to be able to do it. And poor muscle tone is a red flag for various developmental conditions and genetic disorders.

But crawling and standing generally need even better muscle tone and control, so I really wouldn’t be worried yet. If he wasn’t doing anything then I would be a bit worried. But I think you’re grand.

He just wants to get up. Some kids don’t like to sit still when they can get on the move.

Hi,
I just wondered if your baby cracked the sitting as I’m in exactly the same situation as you.
Thanks

Hey!

Yes he did! About 10 months he just did it one day! Now very confidentially sits independantly :) he still much prefers to crawl or stand up though
