Car seat for Volvo xc40

We’ve just bought a Volvo xc40 but the fixed headrests stand proud of the seat. This means our high back booster seats won’t sit flush with the back of the seat. Has anyone found a high back booster that isn’t affected by the xc40 headrests? I’m uncomfortable with the current fit and real don’t want to go to a backless booster.

You can normally just take the headrest out and use it like that.

If you can take it out and put it in backwards so that it juts out into the boot instead, that is the perfect solution.

If that isn't possible, I advise writing to the manufacturer and seeing if they prefer you to use the seat without the car headrest in, or with the gap between the seat and the booster. It used to be that they all said take the headrest out, but recently some have said that it's better to use it with, even if there's a gap there.

If you were looking to change it, I believe the headrest is slightly further forward in the Britax Kidfix seats so that might fit better?

Take the car headrest out, I mean. Don't take the headrest off the child seat!

Lokielo · 22/02/2023 07:34

The headrest isn’t removable unfortunately. You can’t even lift it higher.. Volvo say that an i size seat should fit but our Joie itraver doesn’t and I don’t fancy spending nearly £300 on the Volvo seat. Britax suggests their seats will fit it so I’ll order one and hope it’s ok.

The Volvo seats are made by britax so fingers crossed x

We have the Besafe Izi in ours.

This may not be helpful but could use the middle seat without the prominent headrest.

Yes the Volvo seat is just a rebadged Britax, and not a new one either. You actually get a better seat for less money by buying Britax in the first place!

@Lokielo I am curious to know if this worked as having the same issue in a Polestar? I already have the Britax Kidfix but it still does not sit flush.

@Steppen Can I just check, does it fit well? Same concerns as others, have the XC40 on the way and high back boosters hit the headrest & dont fit into the seat well.
Our older child could have just a booster cushion, but the younger one needs a high back still.
We have Joie travers at present for both and that definitely doesn't fit at all.

@Lokielo Did you find a cheap (traver priced) option? XC40 due soon and not found one myself that fits without spending a fortune.

Lokielo · 04/01/2024 12:43

I bought a Britax seat in the end. The cost difference compared to the amount we spent on the car was so small and we’ll be using it for quite a few years so decided to suck it up. In the end I sold the original car seat on for a reasonable amount too.

You can try the older Britax Kidfix models e.g.

Also looking at the XC40 and can't believe you can't remove the rear headrests! We've already got a Britax Romer Kid isize. With your Britax seat, is it still ok when you extend it upwards, i.e. as the child grows, or do the headrests start to interfere? Thanks!

Lokielo · 18/01/2024 11:03

The Britax is ok with the seat extended upwards. We’re about halfway up at the minute and the seat sits clear of the headrest. I think it will touch as we continue to raise the seat but I don’t think it’s going to be an issue.

Hi there, which Britax model did you buy? Any issues so far?
We have a Volvo V40 AND a Volvo V90. So we don't want to be in a position where we have to change two cars just for car seats.
