8 months old sleep regression

Hi mums,

My usually good sleeper turned into an absolute nightmare. He would just cry for hours on end, utterly exhausted but refusing to sleep. We have to bring him downstairs so he doesn't wake up his brother up.

We had a pretty good routine with him until a few days ago.

Wake up at 6am
1st Nap at 8:15 am would wake up at 9:45 am
2nd Nap 12 pm to 1/1:30 pm
3rd Nap car ride to pick up my husband from work - cat nap 20 mins
Bed time 6:30 pm

He has 3 meals a day.

He would usually sleep through the night. He had been crawling backwards for a while and it didn't change his sleeping through the night.

Now he wakes up every 30 mins we are absolutely exhausted. He is 8 months old.

Any tips on what we can do or make it easier ?

We've just gone through this but without the frequent night wakings. Is he ready to drop the last nap? We've been down to 2 for a month or so.

In terms of getting to sleep, we went in every 5-10 minutes to cuddle and surge, then either put him back down or let him get to sleep on us if he looked like it was an option - but it would still take up to an hour at bedtime particularly. He often wanted a bit of extra milk half an hour in, too.

After about a fortnight of this it's improved and he's self settling again most of the time - good luck!

The third nap is likely danger nap territory! At 8 months if the after lunch nap is decent then they probably don’t need to nap again. Have you tried pushing nap 2 later so more like 1-2.30pm and then trying to keep him awake on the car journey with nursery rhymes and a few toys?

No useful advice but just want to say you are not alone. We are experiencing the same with our 7.5 month old - used to sleep through but now waking crying every hour or more. Whatever we try with her naps seems to go wrong. On 2 nap days I can’t get her to take two good naps and ends up overtired and hysterical. On 3 nap days the last one ends up in danger territory and she refuses to go down to sleep.

@FlounderingFruitcake

Thank you for your advice. I have tried to increase his nap wake windows but he gets overtired and cries until I put him to sleep. If I put him down after 12:30 pm he would only nap for 30 mins.

He wakes up at 9:45 am from his first nap, 1 pm is a big stretch for him .

@trrk I am in the same boat. It's so hard . I also have a toddler who wants my attention to play but I'm so sleep deprived and exhausted. I hope we can see an improvement soon.

My toddler went through a 10 month old sleep regression. But he had a pacifier. Which helped tremendously.

My 8 month old hates being rocked, doesn't take a pacify, likes to be held but wants some space after a few mins of holding but wants to be clingy at the same time I don't know how to sooth him at night. Everything I do ends up hysterically crying for hours.

Hi, I know this is an old thread but wondering how it turned out.

Hi, @Pops27

We dropped his morning nap and moved his afternoon nap to 11am. Made sure he had a full belly before the 11am a bottle of milk 9oz so he would sleep until 2pm . That's a long nap I know but he adjusted really well. He didn't cat nap in the car either at 5pm . However Bedtime did get pushed forward to 8:30 pm but no crying and no tantrums.

Hope this helps .

We just come out of the 18/19months old regression that was brutal lol

Best wishes x
