Hi Chrissi -sorry i've not been on much, not much time. It Is definately not the Isle of Man that has no cars - they have a big race there every year (motorbikes) - it's called the TT. Very fast, on the main roads, very dangerous. Isle of wight has cars - maybe you mean one of the channel Islands? Some of those are so small they have no cars, or maybe Tresco, which is off Cornwall also has no cars.
My MIL is in Turkey at the moment, she says it is V hot. She goes again in July/August, when it is stupidly hot.
For cheaper food I would say Tesco, but sainsburys/asda/somerfield are all similar prices. But the Food in Iceland - wow! Soooooooooooo expensive! I paid for 1 meal out, we had 5 burgers (nice ones, big, not Macdonalds!) with great chips and salad and 4 beers (bottles) 4 cokes, 2 apple pies and 2 ice creams, and it came to 120 Euro! For ONE meal! Drink is especially expensive. Thankfully we were only there 4 days! Although - the scenery makes up for it! There is NOTHING there - black rocks, mountains, hot springs, geysers, waterfalls. That's all. No sheep, goats, rabbits, cows. No noise. It's fabulous, I loved it. And the day we came back there was an earthquake there. We were back in England by then tho....
So, poor Owen! I suppose the younger he gets the allergy, the sooner he may grow out of it? That's what I was told with the heuschnupfen. There are treatments he can take, but I think he has to be older. What a shame he can't do the forest - that sounded so fabulous. We have Ticks here (from the animals - blood-sucking things. Yuk) and mosquitoes in summer. What we call Gnats are smaller, usually just harmless flies that buzz about on a hot evening. We need smelly candles on the table to get rid of them if we eat outside - although it's been so wet here recently it's not been a problem. Today has been the first dry day for ages, I have sooooo much washing out!

So have a fantastic time in Turkey, hope Owen is OK. Are you flying? My dh is trying to fly back from Frankfurt at the moment but his plane is so delayed, due to bad weather somewhere.

chrissi1 · 06/06/2008 10:03

Hi
Good you had a nice time and nice weather in Iceland.Wow 120 and I thought London is expensive.Propably the beer costed the most money.I remember in Sweden it was terr.expensive.
Owen is going to the forrest.Though the doc did´nt find any tablets he can take in case of he getting bitten, I did found them. Clever me. I checked with our GP.It´s much better than sirup, as you can only use it 3 month after opening( sirup).
Our flight is today 23.30,arriving at about 5am. Jeepie!
Til in two weeks!

hi chrissi - hope you had a lovely time on holiday. Did the tablets work for Owen? I am still taking tablets for hayfever, but I am also finding that my eyes are watering so much, my contact lenses are not working properly. I hope the hayfever will die down soon. MIL said it was so hot in Turkey she actually fainted in the street! Anyway she's back now. She goes again in August, when it will be REALLY hot! It's been really nice here lately, about 24C. We are having the patio done at the moment, I have 3 builders here laying stones and gravel so we can sit out in the summer, and have a barbeque.
Essigfliegen! Yes we get them round the wine too. Wein lesen? Not trincken? Is there a difference?
My Owen is away with the school at the moment, he will be back on wednesday. They do all sorts of outdoor stuff, and i'm sure he willl have a good time. It's the first time he has been away from home overnight (except to friends) so I hope he's ok. I'm sure he will be.

chrissi1 · 21/06/2008 11:30

Hi we´re back.
was nice ,only the last 3 days it was realy hot.42 °C and the water was as warm as in a bathtub, about 35 °C.This can´t be good for the fish.
Lesen meanes picking grapes.Don´t ask me why it´s called lesen. It´got nothing to do with lesen ( book).
You can also say , Ich lese Blaubeeren, aber meist sagt man ich Ernte.Lesen sagt man meist im zusammenhang mit Wein ernten, auch die Weinlese.
Oder ich lese seinen Kopf nach Läusen ab...Yuk!
Hope Owen had a nice time.

HI chrissi -I'm glad you had a good time in Turkey. 42C is really too hot for me!
we've only got 3 weeks now before we go away again, to spain and cologne and amsterdam, but the next 3 weeks will be really busy. We've got so many 'open' days at the schools (where we go and see the work the dc have done, or to look at the school the child wil be going to in september) - we've got ds2 going to senior school and ds1 looking at colleges, for further education (age 16) from next year.
I've just had the patio and garden outside done, it looks lovely. So now we can have barbeques, when we get a weekend free (with good weather) to invite people.
My Owen had a great time on the school trip, he came back with a case full of clothes that hadn't even been worn, so I think he wore the same things every day for 3 days. Still, they had good weather, and he really enjoyed it.

Hi Chrissi - hope Owens birthday went well yesterday! Did he have a good time? This week has been really busy, the builders have been trying to get a tree root out of the garden so that they can build a wall, but it is the hardest root they have ever seen! Saws, axes, chainsaws...all have just bounced off! Anyway, we got that done today, and I went to my mother in law's flat to start knocking out her kitchen she is (hopefully) having a new one put in whilst she is away, but I am away from monday for 3 weeks. It is due to be put in on 18th August, so I will have one week back then I start doing that. I went and bought it today, then changed my mind, so I have to go back tomorrow to change it...
The dc are off school now until september 3rd, so I can't get much done with them around. I shall really need this holiday - we fly on monday to Alicante, then train to Barcelona, then fly to Cologne, then car to Amsterdam, back on Eurostar on 6th August.

Und meine schwester und ich farht nach Zurich am 16st August, das ist ihr 50sten geburtstag geschenk. So viele reise! (?)

Und so, ich wunsche Dir und Deine ein gute reise und urlaub in England. Vielleicht die Sonne scheint! (Aber vielleicht nicht!)

hope you can understand that - I have to practice my german!

chrissi1 · 21/07/2008 18:20

Shiner · 30/09/2008 13:11

Hi Chrissi1,

Just wanted to mention that I live in Germany, in Munich. Although it's a hike from your neck of the woods, feel free to get in touch if you are in the area (eg for the Oktoberfest!)

captainofthemummies · 03/10/2008 11:32

Hi Chrissi - sorry I havent been in contact, I lost the thread! We had a great time in europe, - I'm so glad we went to spain, if we hadn't, we would have had NO sun at all! We also did amsterdam, what did you think of it? We thought it waas REALLY expensive, in fact the more north we came the more expensive things were! In spain things are quite cheap (like wine/beer/food!) but by amsterdam we were back to London prices. Didn't really like it there much, Ithought it would be nicer.
Hey shiner - my DH was in Munich last week, for the beer festival. I thought it was in October?????

MalchowMama · 04/10/2008 12:41

I am a lapsed American, living in Malchow, in Norteast Germany (about 1.5 hours North of Berlin), and would be delighted to meet other English-speaking mums about the place. Have 2 small boys, 2 and 4 years old. . .

thequietone · 04/10/2008 13:02

I'm in Munich!

Shiner · 13/10/2008 10:04

Thequietone - great, we are in the same city! Which part are you in? We are in Neuhausen. I have twins, aged 2 (boy and girl), would you be interested in meeting up sometime?

Captain - you would think a festival called Oktoberfest should be in October, but in fact the Oktoberfest only finishes in October, it starts around the middle of September! They shifted it as much towards September as possible to benefit from the better weather.

captainofthemummies · 13/10/2008 18:22

Hi Shiner - we were in Munich last year for the christmas markets and DH went for the oktoberfest, but it's not easy to get to anywhere in germany from here, easyjet go from gatwick to cologne and thats it!
I liked Munich tho.

chrissi1 · 22/10/2008 14:08

Hi captainmummy
Nice to hear from you.Did itold you that owen speaks english ,well a bit ,since we came back from England and he did´nt stop.
Amsterdam well i like it because of Waterstones and that is mainly where we go to.as you said terr. expensive and Grachten you have elsewhere too.
masses of people ande those bike drivers, sheer madness.I always had to look that Owen did´nt got overrun. They don´t stop if a child stands on their bike lane.
have to dash, to playgroup.write more next week
chris

captainofthemummies · 24/10/2008 18:20

Hi Chrissi - That's great about Owen speaking english. The earlier the better! Owen would get 'run over', by bikes. So how was your holiday in England? Expensive I bet. It all seems such a long time ago now. I went to Zurich too in August, had a lovely time. I go again in December with 3 friends, for the christmas markets.
I was reading an article in a magazine recently about the WaldKinderGaerten (?) in germany and they sound fab! Just like you said, the children out in all weathers, learning about the countryside and the world and nature, it's got to be good for them. Most of the mothers in the article didn't want their children to goto main school after that. In fact one of the mothers had set up a WaldSchule, run by other mothers, so that their children could carry on until age 12. (After that, who knows?)

chrissi1 · 28/10/2008 10:14

Hi
Waldschule, never heared of that .Interesting as German schools got a bad reputation.
England was just wow.Absolutely great.
Yes expensive but I even brought some money back. This never happened before.
Tell you later.Have to collect kid from Waldkindergarten!

OP posts:
captainofthemummies · 28/10/2008 19:24

How does Owen get on at Waldkindergarten? You were worried he had allergies to the insects?

The WaldSchule is I think near Berlin, and is only one! The article did say that the Gymnasium schule have good reputations but the HauptSchule (?) don't. But I bet they are not any worse than English Schools.

My mum is going back to Germany tomorrow for 2 weeks - I wish I was going too.
Then as soon as she gets back it will be her birthday and then it really is nearly christmas.

chrissi1 · 29/10/2008 00:47

Owen gets on fine.Sometimes they have a professor comming, like today. He shows them experiments with water or wind etc.You know the glass full of water then put a piece of thick paper on top then put it upside down.
Today a famous musican duo was filming for their new show in the kloister( my mum went to their concerts and had to pay.) they could watch them for free.
He still likes it but the realy realy cold days are not here yet...
About England
The journey to England and back was without problems. Also the journey to London. The tricycle waS perfect.
We met my friend and family ,was nice to see them again. We had a nice and relaxing time allone. We went to bed very late, nearly everyday but that´s holliday.
We lived close to a police stn.I told him about the blue lantern at the station and since then we had to look every night if it´s on.There are no blue or other lanterns here ,at police stations. We looked at the cars .....He likes the english sirens and still immitates english sirens instead of German.Only then I realized there are more sirens there as in Ger.Even in that little town.He thought it´s brilliant.Especially in London he did´nt knew where to look first.
We went to Ipswich once but mainly stayed in town went to the playground ,ruins and park.
We listened and watched a group of bellringers practice ringing. He liked it so much that we stood ther in the rain for ages.He liked the colourfull felt things at the ropes go up and down and it sounded nice.We had candle dinners ( Owen likes candles)and I cooked on a gas oven ,first time since ages ago.It was such a normal live it felt a bit funny, like living there.
London: Our hotel was top.Cheap, clean and very friendly. On the last day we went to the aquarium and made two photo ziphangers I forgot one at the hotel, called it and they sended it back home to us.You can´t ask for more.It was the only hotel ever that had neonlights in the hotelroom.A bit disturbing but I used the bathroomlight instead.
Right after arriving Owen wanted to see the London Eye,so we went, had a ride and a stroll along the Embankment. Then a streetartist asked Owen if he likes to help him.Guess what ,Owen said yes.I could´nt belive my ears as of course the man spoke to him and expected answers.Owen answered in the right moment and time, only one time he gave him exactly the opposite answer than the artist had expected. There was quite a crowd, and they roared with laughter.I had to stop filming because I was shaking so much from laughing.Battery went flat right after the start of the show.
That makes me think ,maybe it was this show and the acting that made him talk more.
We had picnick at Hamstead Heath.Nearly got lost as I was used to another way into the park.+We came into a heavy rain, still looking for a wayout.Of course we had rainjackets. We were used to the weather anyway as it rained rained rained two weeks long.
We found that wonderful playground at Hydepark with a huge pirateship to play on.
I wondered where that playground at Hyde Park is until I walked right into it.It was very close to the hotel. They even had a Punch and Judy show.It was sooo funny. This was new to him.
We went a bit shopping and he´s been such a good boy.
We were at the opening of the olympics at Trafalgar Square.
Not to forget we went 30 min by train to Radlett.I only told him at the theatre that we see Barney! In fact the very first thing we bought in England was a Barney!
The day befor the last he asked if we could stay longer. The last day he asked if we could live in London. MISSION COMPLETED!!!!!
I asked:and Daddy? He said: Oh he can come and live with us here in London!
Sounds so nice and simple .Maybe if we win the lotterie!!I got him hooked and that was what I wanted.
I only drank one beer, while we wenttoa pub.I can´t belive it.I only realized at home.I don´t like lager ,drink only english ale, like Newcastle brown ale,and other of course.
Oops that´s a long message.Hope you got time to read it.

I'm in Stuttgart....have 2 boys 2.6 and 10 months...wltm any other English speaking mums in the area...

captainmummy · 01/11/2008 14:56

Hey Chrissi - your holiday sounds like it was huge fun! Owen is at that age of being interested in everything and not scared of anything! There is so much to see and do in London, I'm not surprised your batteries went flat. Sorry about the rain though. I say that I'm really glad we went to spain in the summer otherwise we wouldnt have got any sun at all. All summer in england has been wet. Its raining now too, but it is November now, so it will not stop until about march.
I love the street entertainers along the Embankment. There are some drummers there on a saturday who drum on all sorts of things; buckets, tincans, paint tins. They are fab. And the 'living statues' are great too. I love the London Eye, it's really stunning.
At the opening of the Olympics we were just sitting watching it at home - we were going to watch maybe half an hour ofit, but we ended up watching the whole 4 hours. Wasted a saturday afternoon but hey....

My mum is in germany at the moment, visiting her sister in Detmold. She phoned me when she got there and talked german to me, and Grrrr i wish she wouldn't but she put my Tante Gudi on the phone to talk to me. it's hard enough for me to understand german but over the phone it's almost impossible!Gudi speaks no english, but we got by just talking about her new grandchild (Enkel? Groskind?) Anyway...

Hey Ilovespinach (really?) - hows your german?

chrissi1 · 03/11/2008 18:24

Well, practice makes perfect.Enkel is the right word or Grossenkel but enkel is better.
It sounds funny but there was a time I could´nt go to England and of course then I did´nt spoke.
I knew you should keep on talking so I read newspapaers out loud to me.Sounds mad but better than nothing. You hear if you do something wrong and I was astonished how rusty my english got.the fluency stops and you start to stutter.Sad that you don´t have German TV.Or do you.The Netherlands are great .they have their own,English and German TV .Good for learning. Just listening helps too.

Hi Ilovespinach.I love spinach too, well only the way my husband makes it.
I´ve never been to Stuttgart. Is it nice where you live.
My son is 5.
Ill at the moment, Virus.Winter is comming!!
