Das stimmt! Viel Spass beim Putzen!!!

Ladette - plesae start a 'learn geman easily' thread - i'd join! I went to a german workshop at my ds1's school, I was the best in the class (of 3!). Lots of multiple choice and ready-written responses to a conversation. I did learn lots about ds1 tho (teacher 'oh he's the boy who hangs around with LizX' me 'Does he? WhoShe?)
Chrissi - my dh and ds1 came back from skiing in Austria on saturday and they brought me back a little jar of Senf - i love senf, much nicer than english mustard. Anyway, the jar said 'SenfKren' - I couldn't find Kren in my dictionary, and when I opened the jar it tastes of mustard and Horseradish (MeerRettisch in german), I wondered if Kren is Austrian for horseradish? My mum didn't know. Meerrattisch is not mentioned in Zutaten, aber Krenwurzl ist. I don't know what that is either.

enjoy your holiday - are you doing anything/going anywhere?

chrissi1 · 26/02/2008 10:47

No idea I take a look.
Hooray ich habe nur ein superbilliges Deutsch Wörterbuch.War offentsichtlich seinen Preis Wert!!
Kren- meerettich comes from tschechisch,slowen..
So your friend should know it!
Thuringia is a famous mustard area.
We went to a mustard mill with ds near Erfurt.
Very old mill,but interesting.
I once bought the best mustard ever in my live in France,Verdun valley ,Provence.( so nice there)
mustard with cognac!
Never found it again.

Wow - Kren ist Tschechisch? Ich wollen meine freundin fragen. Ich wird ihr sehen fritag (?)Ich hofe das die wetter schoen ist, ist sehr sonnig hier heute. Fur Februar!

Mustard with cognac sounds lovely! I was hoping to get the Mittelscharf Senf, it comes in a glass which can be used afterwards, we can't get it here. He also brought back some speck, and some gerauchende wurst, meine ds2 hat es alles essen. Er ist fleischfressend (?) - gemuese hat er nicht gern.

admylin · 26/02/2008 12:09

You know how in Germany you often see British shops like corner shops selling crisps, tea and jam etc - wouldn't a German shop work well in UK with loads of mustard, German wine (excellent wine) and salami etc?
There's a good business idea!

chrissi1 · 26/02/2008 13:50

Lost my message.
Good idea.
After more than 3 month in London I suddenly craved Sauerkraut. The only place i could think of was Harrods and yes they had it.
I don´t cook Sauerkraut that often but your mind can play tricks.
Though maybe it´s too specific.
just Bavarian,German,Ausrtian food and other things, don´t know if you´ll have enough customers per day but then I know of a German Bakery so why not a shop.Maybe over the internet, then you dont have rent to pay.
I know that the English shops in Germany,(not the one that sell the touristy stuff), closed all at once 2 years ago.
Sad.I miss Alpen and cheesecake, mags and all the other things like bacon ,herbal bath etc.
Some of those shops rented and sold DVD`s.
I read they are not easy to get in England,so I heared. Oh and it depends of course where you do it.
I know the Germans, some of them like to eat like at home .Even if they ´re in GB for 5 days.

Captainmummy
Ich mag Deutsche Wurst und gereuchertes Kassler.
I brought it over from Germany, while staying in London and smuggle back tons of frozen cheesecakes.
We could start a private mail service and call it The mustard mum´s.
I gave a friend bread as a present as I visited her in England.
I wonder if you have a ready made bread mix that you can mix with water and put in the oven. that´s what I sometimes do.
Just wondered if I should send her some or if you´ve got some in the supermarket.
I wonder why men like meat so much??
I like cheese!!

captainmummy · 26/02/2008 14:31

Admylin - well we have a whole section in Tescos devoted to Polish food (lots of poles here atm) and indian food (ditto), but no german and the only german wine is Hock Salami we can get but it is italian usually. I love coming over to germany to stock up of senf, lebkuchen, speck, - not so much the cheese (can't think of any german cheeses!) - i would go to france for that probably.

I make my own bread chrissi, although we can get breadmixes here. I also make Brezln!!!!

chrissi1 · 26/02/2008 16:39

Of course I don´t mean german cheese.Mainly eat french and swiss cheese.
Though there is some nice German cheese called Boerdespeck.( Boerde is a area I think)+ it´s not speck at all
This Boerde speck is smoked cheese!(looks a bit like Gouda)
In England you have Applesmoked cheese, I like it.

I´ve got another business idea. Maybe if my husband win´s the lottery.
Imposs to do it in Germany ,as the paperwork and all would make it a nightmare.
I dream of a parents / children bookshop.
A bookshop that has books about children ,health education, storys, cooking everything concerning children and parents. It would have a little cafe in it,a couch or two to make it cosy. There you can browse throu books etc. Also there would be a place for the kids to play, maybe a special room for the bigger children.
Of course it would have a little garden with sandpit etc.
there would be specials like bookreading crafting........
Ok dream on chrissi1.Got a bit carried away here

OP posts:
captainmummy · 26/02/2008 17:29

I like it chrissi - a sort of library/bookshop/community centre with coffee and cake?

I don;t think I've tried the Boerde cheese - sounds good though. I love all cheeses I think, except maybe that Italian one with the worms in it[yuk] - I love all things smoked too, over here we can even get smoked garlic! My mum used to be a chef, so we grew up with what I think of as 'german' foods - duck-and-red-cabbage (my favourite!), kohl-rabi, gruener-kohl, smoked fish/meat. Most of my schoolfriends had no idea what we were eating - the english at that time were eating boiled-meat-and-2-boiled-veg. Even pasta was a novelty, unless it was in a tin and bright orange!

chrissi1 · 26/02/2008 19:46

Cake of course !You´re invited if it ever comes to it.

you made me lauch.Yuk too, heared all about it.
Where do they get those ideas from, euch!
Gruenkohl,not for me.
I think you did´nt try our Hessian Handkäs mit musik( yuk too)Its Harzer Roller(another yuk),another German speciallity with vinegar+chopped onions. You put the vineg.+onion sauce over the Harzer Roller .

We watch the wiggles at the mo,and Owen likes to dance before he goes to bed.Let´s rock´n roll

OP posts:
chrissi1 · 26/02/2008 19:48

You made me lauch?
Hab wohl zu viel vom kochen geredet!

OP posts:
chrissi1 · 26/02/2008 22:10

Smoked garlic, infact I tried dried smoked garlic, saw it for the first time,so tried it out.I usualy use fresh.
I must say I like it-
Here you don´t get exotic stuff.
I got my bookstore idea from the Books for cooksbookshop in London.
Got some of my best loved cookingbooks from there. In those books I found a herb ,called terragon.Never heared of it before . Had to wait for the next time I came to England,so I could buy it.
Now a couple of years later I saw it somewhere but can´t remember where.

Ah perhaps you can help me and tell me what is thickened cream???????????????
Noone can help me I asked arround but not even my playgroup mum´s knew)

Hallo, hier bin ich aber nur kurz. War heute in London, frueh abgefahrt und spaet wieder gekommen. CaptainMummy, so gut ist mein deutsch nicht, dass ich ein "learn German easily thread" anfangen koennte, aber vielleicht koenten wir eine Deutschlehrerin finden, die uns alle etwas lehren koennte (or in English, if my German is so bad "perhaps we could find a German teacher who could help us all learn German)

ladette · 26/02/2008 23:18

(spaet wieder zurueck gekommen)

captainmummy · 27/02/2008 10:36

Chrissi - isn't thickened cream double cream? I think you can get thickened cream here, thinking about it, but I don't know how they thicken it. Maybe with a bit of lemon juice? I'm sure my mum used to do that, or was that for soured cream? (not much help ) You can get clotted cream (from Devon/cornwall) but that is really thick, almost like butter. It's yummy especially on scones or toast.
Tarragon - I'm surprised you don't have it. It is a widely used herb in French cooking, smells like Aniseed(anissamen - i think in german) and is called the 'queen of herbs' in french.(the king of herbs is Basil (basilikum) I think.

Ladette I really don't think you need german lessons! I think you should take the class!

ladette · 27/02/2008 14:30

isn't tarragon "Estragon" in German? Know the word but no idea if you can buy it in Germany, think my spice cupboard was limited to mixed herbs in my student days there!
Cream + lemon = sour cream I think. Can't remember enough about cream to know what double or thickened cream is in German, if indeed you can get it.
Handkaese mit Musik - I LOVE it,especially washed down with cider! Not had it for 20+ years tho. Recently found out why it was called "Musik"....

captainmummy · 27/02/2008 16:16

Estragon is french I think, for tarragon. And isn't HandKaese handcheese? Thats what they cll that stuff that collects round the ball under the mouse....

Euuurgh.

ernest · 27/02/2008 16:41

is it not vollrahm? It is in CH

chrissi1 · 27/02/2008 17:40

No
Milchmädchen I think, so I got told today in a shop. It´s very sweet and thick.Though I never tried it.

OP posts:
chrissi1 · 27/02/2008 17:47

Ha ha ha you personally found out about the musik???
Maybe it looks like that stuff under the mouse.

Estragon is Estragon easy to get in Germany and Terragon is Terragon.
There is´nt thickening cream as such, here.Have to try this Milchmädchen.
Thanks for all the tips.

OP posts:
captainmummy · 28/02/2008 11:06

Hi CHrissi - estragon is definately french for tarragon. Are there 2 different herbsthen in germany - tarragon and estragon? That would be confusing.

So are you going anywhere on holiday? What's the weather like over there at the moment? We have had lovely sunny weather here for about a week. Cold though. I must go down to see my mum this weekend, it's Mother's Day here on sunday - do you have such a thing in germany? She lives about 120 miles away, so it's a good 2 hour drive, with 3 dc in the back moaning. So we'll get a boot-ful of vegetables from her, probably. I don't know what's in the garden at the moment, probably just cabbages! I'll also see my sister, she lives about 100 metres from mum, and her dc, 2 girls and 1 boy. Luckily my dc play really well with hers, they are (mostly) similar ages. Haven't seen them since New Year.

chrissi1 · 28/02/2008 13:34

Hi weather´s nice here.quite warm actually.
Don´t expect any snow anymore though hope dies last.
I thought about digging my tulip bulbs in but better wait.
Today´s my husbands Birthday and we go out for a meal to Mainz.Nice Italian Restaurant there.
Yes I saw once Terragon+Estragon .
If you say it´s the same then I was stupid to wait one year.
Ha ha ha I should have listened to you.took a last look in my dictionary and found it.Sorry! I only thought it must be something different as I saw Terragon in Germany somewhere. Now I will never forget that Terragon is Estragon.Though my Estragon smells different perhaps differnt sort.

Yes we have mothers day.
Ours is a bit later than yours.
I know what you mean with the children moaning. My parents live 300km away. Though he mostly sleeps for 2 hours. The drive is 3 hours.

Holiday I´m not a person that likes Resorts.
Though with child if you like them to play at the beach + have nice weather etc.it´s better and cheaper.
I never liked to go to Turkey but it´s nice there. Good weather and we found a nice hotel. The food is so,so.
We also plan a week in Sweden. Before Owen we did individual hols.Like sit in the car and just drive to France .In Sweden we went canuing.Went to a island and stayed there. You know cooking over fire etc.Nice for children but as he can´t swim yet we get a house or something at the waterfront or so.
If we can get something for a good price.
I also save money like mad to go to England.
The hotels are terr. expensive and even bed and breakf. no so cheap+ I like to buy things like DVD´s toys ( I love ELC toys)etc.

In September we plan to go to Turkey for 2 weeks.Prob. Sweden won´t happen.though we take all the food with us.Depends on the price.( Sweden)
Normaly we go to Holland in Sept. but as we go to Turkey this time +England it would be too much.
I mainly go there as Amsterdam got a Waterstones Bookshop.+the Sea.

OP posts:
chrissi1 · 28/02/2008 13:39

Forgort to ask what are your holiday plans??
Where do you normaly go to?

A last thing about Terragon.I suppose the shop owner bought it cheap in another country or so.+ sold it here.
