Is this CMPA? **poo pic**

Hi everyone. My baby is 7 weeks old and for the last few weeks has been very fussy and unsettled, but it's got particularly bad this week.

  • He's very windy and is farting constantly
  • Crying & screaming several times a day and can't be soothed (often farts while screaming)
  • Arches his back and scrunches then kicks his legs about while he's crying
  • Doesn't sleep well at night and is thrashing about
  • Sneezes a lot
  • Loud stomach gurgling
  • Very runny poo (it's always been like this)

Does this sound like CMPA? Or lactose intolerance maybe? It's horrible seeing him in so much pain and not be able to help him. We've been giving him infacol and gripe water. He's been on cow & gate first infant milk from day 1.

Looks like my kids' at that age. They were also very gassy babies with loud tummy rumbles but I put it down to them being awful at burping! They were settled babies who rarely cried for more than a few moments.

Reflux?

It looks liquidy so with the symptoms, I'd hazard a guess at CMPA (the true prevalence is that it affects around 50% of babies in varying degrees). If you notice any thick/stringy bits in it like raw egg white, i.e. mucous, then even more so.

There's no harm in trialling as that's the only definitive way to rule it out anyway.

It could be. My dd had lots of these symptoms. Also quite severe skin rashes. I don't think it's uncommon for young babies to have loose poos but mucus in them is a tell tale sign of CMPA too.

Once dd started having prescription formula she was like a different baby, so much happier. So it's definitely worth exploring.

Thanks all, maybe not then - I will speak to the GP and see what they suggest. The reason I thought maybe CMPA is that my partner, his sibling & their mother all cannot have dairy. So wondered if it could be something genetic.

@BR1993 did you ever find the answer, was it CMPA?

BR1993 · 02/10/2023 06:39

Hi @PhyllisandO, yes it ended up being CMPA. He was put on Aptamil Pepti 1 which also didn't agree with him but is now going great on Puramino

@PhyllisandO

Hello, just wondering if Puramino helped with your little ones weight gain? Was he having any issues with weight?

How long did it take for Puramino to help?

Mines just been diagnosed with CMPA and he's nearly 6 months, dropping centiles. Started Puramino last week
