Hi all
Sorry for long post - Due to having a low breast milk supply (after trying with my first baby, a girl who is now 22 months), I decided to BF and FF my newborn son from day 1. Also did this so my other half and parents could help out as we have a lot of events coming up as of next month old where I will be away from the kids all day or all weekend so we needed to get our son feeding from others and well.
Our son started to take formula of around 50ml at 4 weeks old. Sometimes he might take 60ml but that was over a very long time. We managed to get him to take 70ml on occasaion, more in the morning, I think because I had a low supply of Breast milk where it had been used up during the night.
Because he won't take much milk in the day, it affected his sleep so he was grumpy and by 6pm to 11pm crying his eyes out in the evening. Come 9pm he would suddenly either go off and on my boobs (he never feeds for more than 5 mins and will only do one boob, never two in the same Feed) and he would take a little more formula, snacking up until 11/12pm then conk out for 5-6 hours. Wake for another Feed of about 4 mins on one boob then sleep for 3 hours.
Now he's 10 weeks old he still can't manage more than 50-70 ml at a time and does that every 2 hours still. Or might take 30 ml then 30 an hour later. Tried everything to stretch his Feed and make him hungry from letting him sleep on me for 3 hours (which he's done once as he won't sleep on me) to walking him outside. But doesn't matter even if he sleeps for 2-3 hours in the day he just won't drink much milk.
HV and Doctor have just told me he will grow out of it and aren't concerned as he's putting on weight but slowly and is just under the 9th percentile. I guess as he has big feeds in the night that helps him put the weight on.
Just wondered if anyone else has had this and if so, when did their babies up their feeds?
He did have tongue tie but that was sniped at a week and I can't see anything else that might be wrong. We've tried giving him a dummy but he won't take it.
My partner and I go away in 3 weeks time and I just want him to feed properly without the screaming and crying in the day so my mum can look after him easily.
He takes about 360ml formula in a 24 hour period with 6 breastfeeds which never last more than 5 mins (some are 5.others are 2 mins) Thank you
