Gosh so my toddler came home this morning from an over night stay with the grandparents and has been moaning and groaning all day fussing and crying.

she didn’t sleep during her nap and now won’t go to sleep!

we are so exhausted and are now struggling with what to do!

we’ve tried her gargling warm water (won’t do it)
calpol
ibuprofen
bonjela kids
anbesol kids

any other ideas?

Is it def canker sores and not something like strep throat?

Don't know what to suggest if you've already tried some pain relief, but maybe something cool like ice pops/ice cream for some short term relief and distraction. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will be along with suggestions...

I assume it's proper bonjela etc, ie the stuff with actual lidocaine in it, not the get you get in the supermarket?

I thought you had to be over 12?/16? For proper Bonjela.

Mammyloveswine · 12/02/2023 22:33

@HyacinthineMacaw thank you! I was thinking what is this childhood illness?!

Op it's a mouth ulcer, yes can be sore but she'll be fine. Give some calpol for the pain and bonjela and lots of cuddles.

Yes and no.

The stuff they still in supermarkets didn't do anything apart from her a placebo and give your the 💩💩's.

But if you ask in a pharmacy they can give you teething products (also by bonjela etc) which are suitable from baby age. These used to be the ones available in supermarkets and everywhere, until a few years ago when they were made behind the counter drugs after some idiot parents decided giving a whole time in over go was a good idea etc .. in response, bonjela also brought out the useless teething gel which doesn't really do anything! Believe me, I tried it on an adult canker sore I had 😂

Bonjela also do adult stuff for mouth ulcers, which contains a different anaesthetic, which isn't suitable for children.

Basically, if it's just picked up off the shelf is pretty much a placebo because of them new law on this.

Ps: the lidocaine ones massively very in strength as well. Anbesol liquid is the best knees, after extensive research with the worst teething toddler ever.

Ducksurprise · 13/02/2023 08:05

Well, that is two things I've learnt today. Didn't know that supermarket ones were now crap, and I also had never heard the term canker sore.

CosyCoffee · 13/02/2023 08:44

I'd never heard of a canker sore, and if someone told me they were suffering with one I would assume they were referring to a syphilis chancre!

Ulcers are rotten though. I avoid toothpaste when I have one (aggravates the sore) and find salt and water swilled round it eases the pain.

watchfulwishes · 13/02/2023 08:45

You can't do anything really, you just have to ride it out. Sorry, ulcers are awful.
