Newborn acne - anything I can do!?

SpudJess · 08/02/2023 15:49

Had my first baby 2 weeks ago and at 3 days old she developed newborn acne.

its getting worse every day and after googling I see a wide range of answers around how long it lasts etc.

I’m also not sure if I should be doing anything to try and fix it.

has anyone managed to get rid of newborn acne and could offer some advice?

It doesn’t seem to bother her, but it looks so sore and is really bad :(

It will clear up on its own. Apparently breastmilk helps (I was never very leaky or good at expressing, so didn't test it)

It's upsetting to see, especially when it's the time everyone is coming to visit, but it will go very quickly. Both mine had it and were fully bf so I don't think that's a magic cure!

My youngest had it every where! I used to use coconut oil on her in the evening and it really helped keep it moisturised. It'll clear up though

I would dab breast milk on it - same with gunky eye too.

No solution here sorry OP. DD2 had it terribly as a baby (along with several chins and a ginger mullet… poor lass). I BF and even tried cleaning her face with breastmilk, did nothing.

Oh, DD had awful newborn acne. Broke my heart. Breastmilk and time. I think DD's went in about 2 weeks?

Congratulations!
It took 8-10 weeks for my baby’s skin to clear up. I kept it moisturised with coconut oil but I always wondered if that would clog it up.
I read that you shouldn’t mess with it, so no popping, but I did wipe it gently with a warm flannel. Got rid of the very flaky bits that were ready to come off.
Not sure if it’s related - baby also had cradle cap for a long time. I left it untreated for a while, hoping it would clear up on its own. A cradle cap shampoo did the trick in the end.

It will go on its own and in the meantime it isn't bothering your child. You don't need to put any product on it and definitely don't pick it.

And to anyone reading, please don't use breast milk to treat sticky eye. Sticky eye is caused by a physical blockage of the tear duct that, again, will clear on its own. All adding milk does is dump a load of sugars and fats in there to feed any bacteria that settle in.

Kokoso coconut oil helps my kids. It does take a few weeks and I just lathered them up constantly.

My baby had horrendous acne from three weeks old. I tried so much- kokoso coconut oil, breast milk, aveeno baby moisturiser, child’s farm moisturiser, mustela cleansing water…

None of it worked and it cleared up entirely by itself a month later. I know it’s upsetting and I still feel sad looking back at photos of him when it was really bad, but it’ll pass in no time at all.

Fireingrate · 09/02/2023 10:48

My second had it really bad! Really huge spots everywhere, lord he was ugly! It will go. Just laugh it out!

i remember how distressed i was when my first child had new born acne. it did go away after several weeks though. i was told it’s about the skin getting used to air or something !

Hello. We had a similar situation. DS (now 5 weeks) developed really bad baby acne on his face at 3 weeks. Looked much more red and angry then the pictures on Google so was worried it was something else. Doctor confirmed it was baby acne and said it would self resolve but because of the redness they prescribed an anti-biotic cream which cleaned it up in about 3 days.

Deffo worth chatting to you doctor for piece of mind.

My daughter had this - for her I was worried it was related to antibiotics, as she also didn’t have yellow breast milk poop. I started her on probiotics - very gradually titrating the dose, poo turned yellow and acne went overnight.
