Hi everyone,

I know the advice is 6 months, did you all follow this advice to start your babies on solids or if not, when did you?

It's not that bang on their 6 month "birthday" they're ready for solids - you should look for other signs which may come sooner: interest in you eating, sitting relatively unaided and stable, ability to bring things to their mouths, something about the tongue thrust but I've forgotten that.

That's why the guideline is "around" 6 months

One was something like 5 months and a few weeks and the other was 6.5 months, "around" 6 months. Neither actually consumed much at all till 9/10 months.

Obviously not everyone does follow the advice, same with everything

My baby is 5.5 months and I recently started him on solids. I'm starting off with baby food / purées once a day and am going to incorporate baby led weaning in a few weeks

My son had solids from 5 and a half months

Week or two before for us. The first two weeks they don't really "eat" food - it's just a taste

Thank u everyone! X

What amount of solids should I give when I’m first starting to wean my 6month old ?

Superscientist · 15/12/2023 22:21

We started trying at 5.5 months but we didn't get her to take a spoonful of anything nor interest in anything whole until 6.5. weaning my daughter was very slow and she only ate the odd spoonful of Weetabix and maybe a handful of peas a day until 13 months when she ate her first actual meal. Around 14 months she started having 3 meals a day.

We tried weaning slightly early in the hope it would improve her reflux but it made naff all difference and it's still a problem at 3.

My best tip for weaning is finding a nice cosy palace in your mind for when you lovely food gets thrown on the floor or at you and baby will eat when baby wants to eat.
