DD2 keeps viciously attacking dd1

She is nearly 2 and I don't mind the tantrums etc, in fact I find them a nice sign that she is growing up. What really bothers me is if dd1 has something she wants she just runs over and grabs a handfull of her hair or claws her face, really hurts her. I have to physically removed she is like a small but rather scary dog. If I was out of the room she wouls literally keep attacking her until she is physically removed. She then cries a lot as though the overwhelming emotion has really scared her. I don't know how to stop her doing it while still sending her calming thoughts IYSWIM.

Sounds like you're doing the right thing already, lifting her away. Calming thoughts are easier if you reflect that this stage is a common one in children, that it will pass, that it doesn't mean your dd is a nasty person. The intensity of her feelings probably is quite scary to her, it gets easier when they get older and realise that they can control their actions.

I have just posted something similar. I am finding it hard to keep DS1 (2) from hurting DS2 (1). Aghhhh!

Dd is nearly 2 and until very recently was often clawing at her older brothers, usually because she didn't like sharing me or because they had something she wanted.

What helped was to say a very firm "No", lift her away and then give my attention to whoever she had scratched. I also showed her brothers how to say no to her and to come and fetch me if dd had hurt them while I was out of the room. That way not only did dd learn that she shouldn't be scratching but the two boys also learned that they didn't have to put up with it.

Dd still does it occasionally but probably only once every couple of weeks rather than the previous umpteen times a day.
